Default Elk hunting question

Just for grins what kind of Ke would I need to take an elk? I know most important would be shot placement! But would you elk hunters take or recommend a 27.5in draw at 67lbs set up be? Any differant than whitetails?

Use what you already use except use a fixed blade head instead of a mechanical if you do use a mechanical. Most adult elk archers usually use an arrow weight 400 grains or more.

People every year kill elk with as little as 20 - 30 pounds of KE. Some are kids with light weight arrows on their first elk hunting trip, some are women with similar set ups just because they can't pull much weight, and some are the traditionlists with heavy arrows. But, one thing these three groups usually have in common are good, sharp, cut to tip two or three blade heads.

They key is to realize your limitations and stick to them and match up your heads to your other equipment.

that is plenty for elk. go for the lungs and stay away from the shoulders. bone is bad.you should get passthoughs with a good fixed blade.

Plenty of bow, to kill an elk, I'd be more worried about self control when Big Boy decides to show himself!

I've heard 42-45ft/lbs Ke for deer and 55 for Elk. What you have is just fine, but if you want to know how much Ke you have there's really only one way. Weigh your arrow and shoot it through a chrono, then go to bowjackson.com and use the Ke calculator.

As stated previously I would stay away from mechanicals and go with fixed blades. I chose some small fixed blades with only 1 1/8 inch cutting diameter to help with penetration. It worked like a champ. I have a 28 inch draw and was shooting a 70lb Patriot Dually w/a 400gn arrow.

I think I had 27 footpounds of KE last year elk hunting. Many people shoot low KE, take high percentage shots and take home coolers of meat. Its where the arrow goes thats the important part - much more so than the KE behind the arrow (within reason of course)
