No, but "POURING RAIN" is a reason to not hunt. I won't go in a pouring rain because I know it can significantly lower my odds of recovery on a marginally hit deer. a light rain is one thing. Pouring is a different matter
So if you are hunting and it is going to pour that night or even during your hunt you are going to pass on a deer, If you only get one vacation and it pours the whole time you are not going to hunt. I have seen the constant jabs at DT for a whileand lord knows he brings it on himselfsometimes with some wild stories, but I think some of you guys are looking for reasons to put him down, just my opinion but it has been happening for months.
I will hunt if there is rain in the forcast. I willNOT take a shot in pouring rain. If it means I lose a vacation day so be it. I get 42 paid days off every year. I can stand not hunting in conditions like the ones described. As far as busting DTs chops goes, when someone, and not just DT, sets themselves up for that kind of abuse they are gonna get it.

No offense fella's...but this is the exact reason I don't venture into the bowhunting forum much anymore.

DT...I hope you can find your deer...and don't let these guys get you down. Everybody does everything different!! Give it your best, that is all we can ask for.

I actually agree with you. We strive to make the most ethical shot, utilize the best equipment, set ourselves up in the best scenario- all to make a humane harvest on a beautiful animal.

Trying to do so in the rain kind of makes everything else moot, if you ask me.

As far as "setting myself up for abuse", here- I really didnt. I shot a deer, thought I hit him very well. Turns out, I was either wrong or I am absolutely horrible at tracking animals. The wet forest floor was the only issue, and- my demise.
You were just too sure of yourself in the first few posts. at that point, when you "knew" you smoked him, is when you set yourself up IMHO.

I just have a rain comment.
Hunting in a down pour, or just before an impending hard rain is rolling the dice. Even a GOOD hit can run 80-100 yds or more. Your average Joe bowhunter can barely find a deer WITH a blood trail, and we all know those odds go down dramatically without one. Sometimes you get lucky & the deer goes down in sight, sometimes it doesn’t. Then you have to get lucky and stumble across it, or wind up with a lost deer. Each person must weigh those odds against how much time they have to spend afield and how well they think they can make a shot that downs the deer within sight or an easy find. If its not the last few days of the season & I have time, I’ll skip out during a hard rain. Crunch time, I’ll roll the dice and sit thru a monsoon. It’s all about risking the odds.

He offers me a shot at 43, but it was too quick. He gives me another at 32- I draw back and before I could settle my pin, my arrow goes flying over his back. My frozen fingers had hit my release.

Seeing as how it was windy and rainy- he didnt really spook. I grab another arrow and he gives me a 37yard shot.

BAM- perfect hit. You literally couldnt walk up and put the arrow in a better spot. He mule kicks, hunches his back, tucks his ail and runs off.
Ok DT......

I need some clarification for a few of the statements you made in your first post.

1st. Why, after missing the buck in a cold, windy and rainy situation at 32 yards would you again take another shot at an even longer distance???

2nd.You are not only positive of your hit you also describe he animals reaction, you said the buck mule kicked and hunched, tucks his tail and runs off.I don't know about anyone else but I've never seen a deer mule kick and hunch when hit in a a front leg, not a elbow or shoulder joint.

Now I've never arrowed a deer in a front leg joint but I did with a gun and the deer reared up and sped off limping badly. He didn't hunch and certainly didn't mule kick (hard to do with a damaged front joint) no, instinctivelya deer hit in the front leg will favor that leg not mule kick and put more weight on the wounded leg.

I recovered the deer only because the bullet carried on into the deer but my point was how the deer reacted to a front leg hit. It was very obvious how the deer ran away, he was favoring his left front leg and I knew right then and there I'd hit him in the leg. I suspect you should have seen something similar as well.

What makes you think you hit him in the front leg by the way you say the deer reacted to the shot???

The only problem I have with this whole scenario is the fact that you are here defending your self instead of reevaluating the shot and and scouring those woods for your deer.
There is no reason to not search, the arrow and the deer are both waiting to be found. And you owe it to the deer.

DT has gotten a lot of abuse. Right, wrong or indifferent, it is what you get here. Yes, some people take themselves too serious and want to tell everyone what to do. That said, the input (good AND bad) from everyone here, helps me make better decisions in the field. I don't agree with everyone (not possible with the varied opinions) but I do take most all comments into account the next time I hunt. The next time DT takes a shot, everything that was said here will impact how he goes about it. If for no other reason, I like the forum because it makes you see things from many different viewpoints. It makes you THINK. Never a bad thing.

Just seen a show the other day(not sure which one) and the guy grazed the buck across the back and it jumped and mule kicked BIG TIME. It was a miss. I couldnt believe he missed by the deers reaction!

I think deer do the "mule kick" more then we realize regardless of the hit. The 1st time I ever seen It was on a hunting video along time ago. There was no way anyone would of picked It up In real time motion but being they slowed It down It was unbelievable on how high the back legs were In reference to the bucks head, they were damn above the bucks head. I never would of thought that possible.

Guess what, he missed that buck taking a chunk of hair off of his back.
