I say gut it where it falls.
Also, where would your truck be parked? On the side of a road? You don't want to leave a pile of guts laying on the side of the road. It looks bad!

You worry too much! Just get out there and get it done and then it will all come easy to you. I gut the deer where they fall. The difference besides gutting a deer in the woods or alongside the road is, in the woods it doesnt take long for all the predators(Fox'x, Coyote, Buzzards, etc.)
to clean it up.
Buddy you can do what you want but I believe as well as many others you are going to put that much more stress on your back trying to get the deer out of the woods then you would by simply gutting it!! The chances are when you go to gut your fist deer, your adrenaline will be probably still be pumping and you wont even remember back pain!!!
ALSO didnt you say your truck was jacked up like 6+ ft in the air?? Once you were worried about getting a guted deer in the back?? How in the world are you gonna get a 50+ more pounds up there any easier???

The last thing I want to do is drag 50lbs of guts out of the woods and I don't think I could hoist a deer by myself. I just drag them far enough to be on an incline so I can just dress them and flip them over to dump them out.
The deer seem to be harder and harder to drag out as it is and I DON'T think it's cause they weighmore. It's an age factor...(sigh)

It used to be I'd go anywhere that I figured I'd shoot a deer. I didn't care what the terrain or how far. Now when I look at a place I calculate how much trouble it'll be to get a deer out.[&:][:'(] Too much trouble I go somewhere else.[&:]

Same here David. I walk 50 yards then sit on the deer for a rest. When I do get one back to the truck I have to fight the thing to get it on board. I still haven't smartened up enough to remember not to shoot a deer farther from the road then I want to drag it
.
My favorite is a good pull thru the swamp or the moutain laurel. Those dang deer just don't want to leave the woods for the last time and seem to reach out and grab everything. Boy I love my cell phone!! HELP!!!!

Everywhere I hunt I can use my quad. I thought ahead this year since I'll be doing quite a bit of hunting by myself, even though last night is a sure sign that might not be a good idea. I have a nice, cheap Wally World collapsable gambrel (pulley hoist) and a length of rope in the storage compartment of my quad. I don't have any problem gutting a deer by myself, but getting a mature buck onto the cargo rack of a quad is a major feat for one person. All I have to do is find a limb the right height, "larks head" the rope around the limb, hang the gambrel and raise the thing up, tie it off and back the quad under it.
I guess if I wanted to gut it that way, I could hoist it up head first, but I don't see any point. I can gut a deer on the ground and not get blood and other crap all over me, but if you gutted the deer hanging up or on the tailgate, think of what will happen with that big mess plops down at your feet! You'll be covered from the knees down, and you'll be kicking yourself the entire drive homebecause ofthe stench in your truck, and unless you change clothes, the cab of your truck will stink for weeks.
