I say gut it where it falls.
Also, where would your truck be parked? On the side of a road? You don't want to leave a pile of guts laying on the side of the road. It looks bad!

We gut almost every deer and hog we get on the tailgate. just get him up there and start cutting. helps the back with all that bending over. Helps though to have 1 or 2 buddies with you to help spread the legs and maybe hold the light if it's dark.

If you decide to use a rope and hoist the deer up using a tree branch make sure you have the rope secured well. Once of my earliest childhood huntingmemories was of my dad "dancing" with a bloody deer.

Worth a shot I guess if your back is that bad......
You don't have any young bucks just learning you can hand the knife over to? seems like that would be even easier!!!

well i have a game cart so thats not a big issue. one thing i worry about is the fact someone gutted a deer right by where i park at one of my spots today it smelled bad and i am talking four days in 70s bad. I do not want to smell that or have the deer smell it anywhere near where i am hunting.

I would rather bend over than drag an extra 50 lb back to the truck.

You worry too much! Just get out there and get it done and then it will all come easy to you. I gut the deer where they fall. The difference besides gutting a deer in the woods or alongside the road is, in the woods it doesnt take long for all the predators(Fox'x, Coyote, Buzzards, etc.)
to clean it up.
Buddy you can do what you want but I believe as well as many others you are going to put that much more stress on your back trying to get the deer out of the woods then you would by simply gutting it!! The chances are when you go to gut your fist deer, your adrenaline will be probably still be pumping and you wont even remember back pain!!!
ALSO didnt you say your truck was jacked up like 6+ ft in the air?? Once you were worried about getting a guted deer in the back?? How in the world are you gonna get a 50+ more pounds up there any easier???
