"stopping" deer?
#11
i learned my lesson...buck was jumped a good distance away but still came by me trotting...."bahh" he froze...i was already locked on him at full draw and arrow was loose as soon as he froze...at the same time he swung his head directly at me and ducked as he went to bolt.....never again. i'll let him trot off before i do that again. better chance of seeing him again rather than hitting him above the spine and wounding him.
havent shot one walking yet, but a typical deer walk, within 25yds, i dont think it will be super hard...and deer normally stop for atleast a second here and there every couple steps...
during the rut, i would likely stop a buck trailing a doe...

How many of you actually stop a buck by mouth grunting, whistling, or yellingto him? Maybe I'm in the minority here, but the last thing on my mind is alerting a buck to my presence. I'll take my chances that he will stop on his own eventually where I can get a shot off or we'll meet another day. Seems to me like 99% of the hunts I watch on TV everyone has to "stop" the buck. Maybe it just looks cool for the cameras.

I stop them only when necessary. It's far better to just have them grazing, head down and lessen their chance of jumping the string than it is to have them posing and staring at you!
But yes, I do stop many deer as I usually catch them in a browsing mode where they are walking along not pausing much and because I also frequently have small shooting lanes. Having said, that it's usually just a "meee" type of a noise and it has stopped all but 1 deer, who at the time, was chasing a doe- hard! They'll never stop

Around here you have to make a "kissing" sound to stop does, and a mouth grunt for bucks. Thats just the way us Chatham hunters do it
. Of course most deer stop so we dont have to....
