It all depends. Sometimes I whistle, grunt, or say pssst. You can say pretty much anything to get those ears perked.

I don't do anything, I prefere to shoot at a relaxed deer vrs one that is startled. I do like to throw some apples or something on the ground where I think the deer will walk by. Sometimes they will stop to sniff it or eat something. Then when there head is down and they are unaware I zip one thru them.

I've only had to stop 2 deer and on both of themI was at full draw and let out a "mmrrp" to stop them. Both of them stopped dead in their tracks right there right now so make sure they are where you want them.

Many times if you have a lane cut and picked out you can just paw the ground with your boot to get them to stop and sniff it. It has worked for me in the past. they don't always come where you want so I generally use a short maaa.

Usually I'll make a noise something like "Maah."

Once I decided I was gonna pass gas to stop a deer, so right as he entered into the shooting lane I let one go. He stopped, looked at me, and said, "I didn't know we had them barking spiders in this neck of the woods."
Seriously though, I just make a soft and subtle "maaaat" and they stop right where they are. Listen to a young buck grunt and try to imitate it, I got it down pat.
