With plenty of large,(100ac) plus full time food plots on the Tecomate Ranch the deer will naturally gravitate there due to the food source. Lee Lakosky does the same thing in Iowa. In the middle of his propery are large food plots. Once the surrounding farms harvest their crops the deer just pour in to his farm cuz it's the only resataurant open. A low fence restricts movement of cattle not deer.

Almost every place I have hunted has a fence to some extent. Most cases it is a boundry marker, or maybe to keep some predators out. Usually it is there because someone wanted it there for some reason or another. And I don't think it has ever been to keep deer in.

To answer your earlier question, no I have never hunted like this, or gone on a guided hunt. I am poor, that would never even be an option for me. On top of that I will not pay to hunt deer. I don't do it for the trophy aspect, I do it because the state wants me to and I enjoy it. I won't pay more than I have to do it though. I won't even lease land, I will just find something else to do that doesn't involve that kind of money if comes to it.

Your first post does a bit more than imply that someone may not be that great of a hunter. Ripping on some girl for killing something in a way you don't see fit is a far cry from that. If you can't see that there is no explaining it to you. I honestly can't see a purpose to posting it in the first place other than to make someone else look or feel bad. She was probably as excited as all get out to shoot that deer. Then someone like you wants to come along and tell her it didn't mean anything? I really just don't get that.

I have never in my life killed an animal and felt it was belittled because of the way I took its life. Never once have I stood over a dead animal and thought to myself it didn't mean anything because it was too easy.

Dr. Andy, so that's why Tecomonte has a low fence?? Really, I want to know why they have it, or any place for that matter.

If you don't understand why ranches have fence, then you don't understand ranching at all. In Texas, ranches raise cattle. Even if you don't, then your neighbor most probably does. Your property will be fenced off from your neighbor, either to contain your cattle, his cattle, or in most cases, both. Every piece of property here has at one point or another had cattle on it, and had to be fenced. You don't tear it down just because they are gone, fencing is a substantial investment and you just may need it again sometime. We have very little public land, it is in private ownership, and must pay for itself making a living somehow. Down in that part of the state rainfall is low, the land is not much good for farming without irrigation, so people raise cattle. It's that simple. They must be kept on their owners property.

Thanks for explaining Critr-gtr. I was unaware that there was cattle around that ranch. Also, Paul I can see we just have two different opinions, and Im not one to argue about who is right or wrong. Again, for the 20th time, if someone wants to shoot a deer in that circumstance then go for it, you just won't get respect from some of us, and some you may. I don't care if I ripped on the woman, she really was about 20-21yrs old, not a kid. It is what it is, if she got a rush off of that, then she may go into heart failure if she ever does it with a bow at 12 yds. Face it Paul, we see deer hunting in two different lights, if you think that is deer hunting on Tecomonte then good, I don't think it is, but some may feel that bowhunting pressured deer is not hunting, and that taking a mature deer with the bow on open range property is not as much of a challenge as shooting one with a .308cal rifle at 300 yds on a ranch in Texas. Oh well, I guess it's a matter of opinion. Ps, Im glad we can disagree and be respectful at the same time, that's why I love this forum. No joking Paul.Take care friend.

As far as the girl shooting a nice buck two years in a row,if you're talking about the same episode I saw I think it was the owners daughter or granddaughter. Sorry Vabowman, I thought I did mention the cattle part. Here in IL and WI there are fences too, to keep the dairy cows in the pastures or out of the cropfields. Low fences do nothing to stop deer movement and I think you still qualify for P&Y and B&C. And no I don't hunt that way, couldn't afford it and probably wouldn't do it anyway. If however I could afford to go on an elk hunt I would do it with a guide, the logistics of me being able to scout, plan and supply a trip like that would make it virtually impossible as a DIY trip, the first time around anyway.

Ok, yeh I understand the low fence area, we have those here for cattle. I was thinking it was for something else, keep out predators, people, ect. I did not know how low he meant. Please don't think Im bashing all guided hunts, im not. Im just used to hunting a different way. Most of us on are.

I dont see where he said that , I thought tecomonte , as most texas ranches had a high fence to keep the deer in , not cattle fence that any wild animal can get right through

Im not sure if Tecomate is considered a fair chase situation or not. Most of these ranches in Texas are primarily cattle ranches with the deer hunting bringing in extra revenue, am I wrong about that?
