im on the fence on this subject. i think qdm is great and i believe in it, but i dont think it is for everyone. some people shoot small deer just to kill something, thats ok its their decision on their property.
the only thing i call BS on, is how all the qdm preachers are so "condesending" but all the nay sayers who preach trophy hunters are ruining hunting arent condesending?because someone trys to convince you to shoot bigger deer, they are blamed for ruining hunting.....
so i say shoot what you want, but please, PLEASE, dont whine about how mature bucks are so plentiful in some areas but not yours. ITS BECAUSE THEY WERE PASSED UP AS YOUNG IMMATURE DEER. the hunter who saw all these easilly killed monster midwest deer as 1.5 year olds, didnt squeeze the trigger and justify his shooting with, "well.....people around me......ummm.....if i didnt shoot him, someone else surely would have" guess we'll never know.

WOW! ive read it all now....GregH, thought of by many, as one of the most knowledgable hunters on this site, is now just a clown who is living proof that any old joker can go out and kill mature deer year after year consistently. seems to me like this clown knows what hes doin atleast. Not making him out to be a hunting god, but his knowledge base of deer is obviously way above most others. but i forgot, its not a challenge for him because of location.[:'(]
Anyone who is crazy enough to still wear trebarkhas my respect[8D]

Why is it so hard to understand the word "no"??

Once again,I see the trophy chasersdismiss the statement that "someone else will just kill him"...........yet they can't get anything accomplished on their own. Why is that?? Could it be that everyone you let pass is getting killed by someone else??
Is that why you run to the neighbors and complain so much?

i am neither a shoot everything, nor a trophy hunter....in between. i have personal standards which i set, being around the 120 inch mark.....and if a deer doesn't come close, i let him walk, course this could be why im buckless for two years straight now, maybei shouldve dropped my standard and shot the little 4s and 6s, when i didnt succeed in meeting a personal goal.
your one to preach about instant gratification, and how it baffles you, but people "in you camp" as stated earlier shoot the first deer they see big or small. that seems pretty instantaneous to me.

not sure what your response means, please elaborate on the boldface...what can't they accomplish?

It's late...I'm tired..but...I post this every year, that is true...perhaps I could be more cuddly and loving and think about every hunter in every corner of every woodlot and his/her own respective situation but I simply cannot. I feel obligated to make "hunters" think, because you are not "just" hunters, you are deer management specialists...every time you go afield, and you take or don't take an animal, you are making a "management" decision. You all must adhere to specific harvest criteria and it is those criteria that do NOT just affect your own corner of the world... they ripple and they end up in your neighbors woods and his/her neighbors woods and on and on. It's just not about antler size...did you read that...it's NOT just about antler size...it's about improving the quality and health of the deer in every corner of the deer woods...please explain to me how not having a scientificly balanced deer population hurts any hunter in America. Regardless if you hunt in Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida, Virginia, Maryland, or the sad state of Arkansas (home of the Clintons) had to throw that in...the bottom line is that if the basic premise of QDM were practiced....every hunter would reap the benefits...if you were a meat hunter you would have ample opportunties to fill your freezer with doe meat as most any hunter would tell you there are too many does and if you ever even conceived of taking a deer that weighed more thana30 lb bar bellthen you would eventually have the revelation that their are so many in your woods that you can actually NOT take a shot because you've seen more than one AND they could possibly expose your limit on the bench press.
It's a relative thing relative to every hunter's neck of the woods...but is a genious concept that can be applied to every hunter in every woodlot in the deer woods. The deer are counting on you...
Good luck...and good night...
