Say what ya want about Atlas, but all I know is thathe's batting 1.000 on the bowhunting contest. Not many people can say that... The guy's shot more deer than some of y'all have ever seen from a treestand.
I'd take him on my team any day.
Sometimes I think he doesn't deserve all the flack that comes his way. (I know, he argues, which invites the criticism). All is fair in love and war, I s'pose.
He fills his tags - and that alone, in my eyes at least, puts him among the elite in our sport. He knows deer, and could wait out a bigger one if he really wanted. We all know he could. However, he's showed us all, with his actions - not words, that size reallydoesn't matter (to him). I can respect that, personally.

I make a prediction that you will have to change the regs to make that happen on public land. Not much of a prediction, I know, but that's the only way it'll work. But I don't know how well it's going to fly with the average Joe when trophy hunters approach wildlife commissions, trying to impose their will on the masses.
I make a prediction that in 5 years 90% of states will have antler restrictions of some sort and that in 10 years folks will be laughing at how ridiculous and archaic the mentality was of hunters and management practices in the old days. It's Darwinism at it's best...simply an evolutionary process. Many of our states went from few if any deer where there was no season or the bag limits were extremely restrictive, then to a population explosion where in some states you can shoot a deer a day, and eventually things will settle out and sound management practices will prevail. Don't hate me...I'm just a prophet on a mission.

Just corrected the quote so not to confuse anyone, Rob

Yeah, wolfen, but what they did in PA is not the same as what I think is being talked about here. They enacted point restrictions (3-4 points per side) because people taking too many yearlings. These guys are talking about taking mature bucks, and I agree with that and think PA's restrictions make sense. On the other hand I most emphatically do NOT agree with the definition of 'mature' that these fellas are pushing.

Atlas, you and I (and many others) have been around and around on this. We know you don't agree with the trophy hunting mentality and will shoot whatever you want, that's fine by me you're doing nothing wrong. I refuse to get into this with you and rehashing the same stale arguments, because you do not hunt my state and are no threat to any deer I may be shooting or passing on, so it makes no difference to me what you do.
Perhaps you should try reading everything and getting the whole message, but you read whatever you want into everyone's posts anyway, so it won't matter.

This is an old retread but I feel compelled to post on it so that the newer readers don't see only side of the arguement. The thing most of the QDM crowd misses (and I am one on my own property) is that not everyone has the same goals or motivation for hunting they do. Really, there are people in the world who don't care about antlers and just enjoy hunting deer. To reuse the fishing analogy used earlier:somepeoplejust like to catch fish for the fun of catching fish and aren't looking for the biggest fish or a citation. Some people just like thecommoraderie of spending time with others or being out in nature and stocking their freezer.Don't assume that what makes a hunt special to you will be viewed the same by others.

I am in the contest this year and I hope to help my team out, but I will hunt for me and only me. I, like many, would love to kill a big buck and I may just pass on a smaller one if I feel I can get on a slammer. I may just shoot it too, only time will tell. I will also do my part inkeeping the deer population in my area in check. Where I hunt there are plenty of deer...both male and female and in all agesso there is no need for me to pass on any deer for any reason other than total numbers.
Some people take this way too far...it's hunting and it's supposed to be fun.

With the season quickly approaching it is now the appropriate time to spread the message once again...it's time to come out of the cave, step into the light, mature as hunters, do the right thing, and let 'em go and let 'em grow.

There is a lot assuming go on here and itbugs me the most. We have been condition to think when someone mentions QDM the said person is telling others how to hunt. Wolfen68 this post is pointless, but has kept me entertain last couple days.
No where besides wolfen68 have I read anyone telling others what to shoot.
There is a lot of assuming on the QDM folks that if you do not tow the line, you are a browner downer. Not True IMO
I know Atlas and i rib on each other, but in the name of Fred Bear STOP and Listen to each other.

We have guys from every part of the country comparing how & where they hunt with how & where everyone else hunts. [
]Some of you hunt closer to houses than is even allowed in other areas. Some of you see more deer per day than I will see thru most of the season entire season. And some of you will pass ten bucks bigger than have ever passed thru my woods.
Education not legislation is the answer ,but its a big country out there so remember its supposed to be fun for all .Don't ruin itmany in the name of making it better for all.

Well, IMO, let 'em go let 'em grow doesnt apply to all hunters. It depends wether you are a sportsman hunter, a trophy hunter, a beginner, or a meat hunter.
