Archery and Outdoors in our School

Here in Wisconsin we have the NASP (NATIONAL ARCHERY in the SCHOOLS PROGRAM). We use genesis bows, arrows and targets provided by this program. *Thank You Mathews*. Every year we head up to Wisconsin rapids for a fun tournament with prizes. The bus trip is about 2 1/2 hours but its a blast. Here are couple picsof my son at this past shoot up that way. Next years both my sons will be in it. Enjoy.

Those are some great pictures right there and that sounds like it would be a blast. Nothing beats seeing the face of people when they shoot their first bow, especially children. Great pics again guys!

It all depends on the teacher and the students. I had my first go at teaching archery during my internship 2 months back and it went very well. There was zero tolerance for horse play and i made that very clear to the kids. Prior to shooting i spent a class going over all the parts of the bow as well as safety concerns followed up by an exam. If you didn't get 100% on the exam you never got to shoot. I never had any problems with any of the kids who in other activities tended to be a handful. I think the main thing is to get across the danger of this activity and importance in following directions to the students. Yes some school divisions have banned the activity but i believe if the teacher knows what they are doin, no problems.

I wonder how safe it is?
There used to be javelin in schools not to long ago.

Exactly Hiawatha.
Our program, like PEAKRUT mention is also the NASP. I and one other teacher are NASP certified instructors and we are the only two teachers in our school that teach the archery courses.
NASP is a great program, the curriculumn is safe, clear and concise. We follow the step by step program.
From the two days in the classroom first off;covering every aspect of archery safety, parts of the bow, parts of the arrow, the 11 basic shooting skills, range policy and procedure, arrow retrieval safety etc... all of it..is practiced before we ever allow our kids to touch a bow. Our kids are tested and must pass the test to shoot as well. They take the test over until the get a 100%
Up front we set the expectations which is a "0" tolerance policy. Period. No exceptions. Its amazing how well archery kids do if the guidelines are clear and arepresented in firm yet caring manner.

I grew up in northern Wis and we had an archery section to PE. Heck, I even brought my own compound bow to school and kept it in my locker. I doubt they even have that part of PE anymore, let alone allowing you to bring a weapon to school in the post Columbine era.

Well this father was as proud as could be. This past Thursday 5/31/07 they had the sports awards at
the grade school and archery was included for the first time. They had this shoot (NASP sponsored)
at the local archery club back in april I believe it was. They didnt announce the places then so they could save it for this awards presentation. Well my youngest son who is 6 and not old enough for NASP yet filled in anyways at the shoot due to lack of participation but still 12 kids showed up. Well they had the awards and im sitting there and his name gets called first for finishing 4th place. You talk about one proud smiling father. So they announce 3rd place then they get to 2nd place and its my other son the 10 yr old. Now im just beeming something fierce.
Now if only Wisconsin would change the 12 yr old to hunt law we would be set.

Fantastic! What a great way to introduce archery and the outdoors to young people! Awesome that in Troy's community's case the money was contributed by sportsman. That's where the rubber meets the road, when it is more than lip service and people give of their time and money for positive things like this!
