I wonder how safe it is?
There used to be javelin in schools not to long ago.
It all depends on the teacher and the students. I had my first go at teaching archery during my internship 2 months back and it went very well. There was zero tolerance for horse play and i made that very clear to the kids. Prior to shooting i spent a class going over all the parts of the bow as well as safety concerns followed up by an exam. If you didn't get 100% on the exam you never got to shoot. I never had any problems with any of the kids who in other activities tended to be a handful. I think the main thing is to get across the danger of this activity and importance in following directions to the students. Yes some school divisions have banned the activity but i believe if the teacher knows what they are doin, no problems.

Exactly Hiawatha.

Our program, like PEAKRUT mention is also the NASP. I and one other teacher are NASP certified instructors and we are the only two teachers in our school that teach the archery courses.

NASP is a great program, the curriculumn is safe, clear and concise. We follow the step by step program.

From the two days in the classroom first off;covering every aspect of archery safety, parts of the bow, parts of the arrow, the 11 basic shooting skills, range policy and procedure, arrow retrieval safety etc... all of it..is practiced before we ever allow our kids to touch a bow. Our kids are tested and must pass the test to shoot as well. They take the test over until the get a 100%

Up front we set the expectations which is a "0" tolerance policy. Period. No exceptions. Its amazing how well archery kids do if the guidelines are clear and arepresented in firm yet caring manner.
