The more I hunt out west, the more I find myself using the 5X5 descriptive. Although, I use points most of the time.

I count all the points. However, I believe it is more a geographic thing. It seems that people from the east and midwest say 10 point where more people from the west say 5 x 5. I don't know if this is accurate. This is just the way it seems to me. I think its because you westerners have more large game animals like mulies and elk that have many more points than a your typical whitetail. JMHO
yeah I understand where you're coming from. I was raised in INDIANA!!! Go all you HOOSIER HUNTERS! Anyways, my brother guided in wyoming when I was little. When he came back he was using #x# and that's when I started using it. I think I'm one of the extremely few easterners who will actually use #x#, but that's ok. It works either way. Most guys will know either way when you're talking about it.

If they have the same number of points on each side they are 4 pts, 5pts and such for Whitetails. Stickers, drops and flyers are mention serperately. When I first started hunting... bowhunters weren't very common. Riflehunting was big with deer drives the main method. I think most got used to seeing only the one side since the deer were running by the posters. That's why theone side desrciption. Now days bowhunting is more popular and different methods are being used during rifle. More people are going to a 5X5 or such description. Even a few go by the total points. We tell them to move back east. I am still stuck on the one side description for even racked bucks.

Different number of points per side I go by 5X4 or such. Since most whitetail have brows we count them here.

Out in the western part of the state, the mulies are counted without browtinesbut are mentioned if they have them...seperately.

Tim

I don't mention it....until someone asks me. HOW they ask me will determine the answer I give. I just say I shot a buck until I'm asked about size or antlers or (______). I'd really never thought about it until now, but people in these parts typically note points.....which is flawed, in my opinion (if you really want to know how big the deer was).

If it's a 5X5, I say, "ten pointer".
If it's a 6X4, I say, "ten pointer, 6 on one side and 4 on the other."
I usually describe the spread, tine length and mass as well.

I use both. I usually describe a deer as a mainframe X with X# of stickers. Plus give the gross score.
if somebody wants that much detail I'll show them a picture!

now, if i were to shoot a big one, i would probably say # point with a ##" inside spread. i have never taken a buck big enough to care about the spread
Dan, that is exactly how I describe deer. When I talk to people about the size of the deer I see, they always want as much detail as they can get. Those are the kind of people I associate with. I'll even throw in a spread, mass and tine length measurement as well.[:-]

I admit...... I'm an antler addict!![8D]

Most of the people I talk to about my deer know exactly what I am talking about when I describe my deer. The only people I tell about the deer I shoot are serious trophy hunters.

As well am I!
