I heard a buck growl today!

I had 7 deer run under my stand and stop in the meadow in front of me.3 fawns, 2 does,a 1 1/2 4 pt and a 2 1/2 8 pt. Once they all stopped, the 8 pt. let out a "growl". It wasn't much, more like a loud carbonation belch. But it was a "growl". What do you expect from a 2 1/2 who's trying to impress the ladies. These deer were from 2 to 20 yards in front of me. I had a birds eye view (28 feet up). After the loud burp, the ladies left. The young bucks were quite puzzled and there was only one thing left to do... Start fighting! Those two sparred in front of my stand til 15 minutes after dark and then finally left. They went the opposite direction of the does and fawns. I had watched them earlieracross a soybean field from my stand. It was an interesting night. BTW, one time I had a love sick 1 1/2 6 pt. chasing a doe who wanted no part of him. He was grunting the longest grunts I ever heard. These weren't growls, they were grunts. He did it for over a half an hour so I started timing their duration. 7-10 seconds! That is long, don't ya think?

I have to tell you a great one I didn't hear a buck growl, but I did hear him fart . He a little forkhorn got under my stand at about 3yds smelled something he didn't like turned broke wind and trotted off I was laughing so hard I thought I was gonna cry I don't know why it struck me so funny but I was like a ten year old I just couldn't stop cracking up. I guess maybe since the hunting has been so slow here in NY thats the hi-lite of my season man is that sad.

Your right Greg, that is an extremely long duration for a grunt. Sounds like that 6 pt was having some bad love pains! The longest vocalization I ever herd was Clicking, showing an act of aggression against another Buck. I always figgured that clicking was a grunt slowed down 100 times from being so tensed up. I have an old tape around here some were with a Buck clicking on it, if I ever find it, I'll speed it up and see if it resembles a grunt, Hay if Im wrong, it wont be the first time!! Could just mean your fixing to get thumped punk! The wife is hunting a well used trail with several scrapes on it, saw a 8pt trying to wind cent it from a distance, looked like it was going to move off soShe gave it a quick Doe moan. The Buck immediately looked her way, let out the quickest"URP" she ever herd andcome right in, She said the Grunt was so short and quiet it would have easily went unnoticed if she had not been paying attenchion!
