The one thing that bothers me about your statement is about you feeling that because you bought a license you feel the need to fill the tag. Maybe it's time to take a look at your inner self and ask why you are hunting in the first place. When it comes down to choices I can honestly say that if your main goal is to put meat on the table it's a whole lot easier and cheraper to just go to the store and buy it. Hunting is not cheap meat no matter what anybody says.
If one of your goals is self fullfillment then the compound bow is the way to go. I always find it more fullfilling to know I've done my best to become proficient with the weapon of my choice and the more of a challenge I give myself the better I feel when I've done my best.

Give the guy credit for being wise enough to match his equipment to his abilities. Sounds like he has several years to get good with the compound if that's his preference.

Don't let others put you down.
If you don't feel confident enough about using a compound, then use a crossbow.
While some will argue that crossbows have an advantage over crossbows, IMO any advantage that they may have is not enough to take away significantly from the challenge of bowhunting.Having the same effective range and limitations on having to kill the animal in the same fashion, you still have to incur many of the same challenges that bowhunting incurs. Some will claim that you don't have to draw back and hold with a crossbow, but IMO if having to draw and hold vs not having to draw and hold separates what is challenging from what is not then those who believe so are narrow minded IMO.

I hunt with both compound and crossbow. I think the main advantage with crossbow is not having to draw at that crutial moment! I got busted by a nice 8pt this year while drawing my bow. I know that's part of bowhunting and I'm just saying that with my crossbow that buck would have lost! I shoot both bows with consistant, accurate groups.

Go with what your comfortable with for now. Practice in the off season to become proficient with your compound. Take it from a guy that due to multiple shoulder surgeries, can't hunt with a compound again! I miss my it.

I've been hunting for 5 years now and been practicing with my compound that whole time. I have shot at 3 3-d Targets that i shot them so many times they fell apart. I have taken my compound bow out hunting but i haven't yet drew back on a deer. I got trigger happy because i stopped shooting for awhile and started back up and thats how i was. I feel that to use my crossbow i am more confident. I shot this guy this year with it. Thanks for the confidence in trying to use my compound. Next year, since i shot my buck this year, i will try harder to try and shoot one with my compound bow.
