The one thing that bothers me about your statement is about you feeling that because you bought a license you feel the need to fill the tag. Maybe it's time to take a look at your inner self and ask why you are hunting in the first place. When it comes down to choices I can honestly say that if your main goal is to put meat on the table it's a whole lot easier and cheraper to just go to the store and buy it. Hunting is not cheap meat no matter what anybody says.
If one of your goals is self fullfillment then the compound bow is the way to go. I always find it more fullfilling to know I've done my best to become proficient with the weapon of my choice and the more of a challenge I give myself the better I feel when I've done my best.
I believe he's saying that until he's more competent and comfortable with the compound bow, the crossbow offers the best option to fill the tags with a clean kill. Don't think the Dr. Phil impression is necessary.
Give the guy credit for being wise enough to match his equipment to his abilities. Sounds like he has several years to get good with the compound if that's his preference.
