Here in washington hunting with dogs anything other than raccoons and I think yotes is illegal. If a dog chases a deer I'm hunting and I see it as I said before If given the opportunity I will shoot. As for the story told before about the dog getting shot... if it was in its own yard when it was shot then whomever shot it has some serious problems. If the dog was chasing deer and was on someone elses property its fair game as far as I'm concerned. For those of you who let your dogs chase the deer in your backyard, and live in washington state, Its illegal and you can have some serious fines and even have your dogs taken away for it. If you don't want deer in your backyard go out there and pee and the deer will stay away.

The title says it all. Right or wrong the ones who ultimately suffer are hunters who are having more land closed to them every year. The first post said nothing about this dog chasing deer. People should not let their dogs run loose. I don't know if I could shoot a dog, since I would be hard pressed to tell if it was a wild dog that had no owner or if it was a careless pet owner's dog that had no business being loose. All I know that in the mid-atlantic area it is exteremly difficult to find land to hunt on and I will do anything I can to not give hunters a bad name. I know I would be bummed if I lost permission to hunt on thetwo small farms I hunt on just because someone killed the owners dogwho happend to get out of their pens. The oldfarmer who owned the land I hunted on for 30 years told me someone once shot his horse with a shot gun. After the farmer died his land was sold and now that 300 acres is off limits to everyone, not because of that horse shooting, just because the new owners don't like hunters!

People like that should be taken out back and a
apple put on their head and have a couple first
timers shoot some out of tune bows with some
dull broadheads. "You go first"

All I can say is that the title of this thread is DEAD ON!!

The part that makes me sick is when I hear..."I shoot dogs because they're running deer" when in reallity I'd bet that 8 out of 10 dogs shot by bowhunters were shot while they (dogs) were just wandering through the woods. I'd say you'd have to be a pretty good shot with a bow to hit a dog running full speed after a deer huh?
The dog shooters can try and justify all they want but it wont change the fact that it does indeed give hunters a black eye.

I saw that same story and is very very sad. [&o]

I asked a farmer if I could bow hunt his land outside of the crops and he said sorry he let someone bowhunt it one year and while his daughter was walking her dog the hunter shot it. No it was not on a leash but was on her own land and not far from her owner. Really how can you argue that. I just said sorry to hear that and not all hunters are idiots. But thankyou for your time.

Its very sad indeed

Just what hunters need right? Some idiot redneck who calls themselves a hunter shooting somebody's dog. Under this circumstance it was WRONG!!! but I can see someone shooting a stray or a dog that continually runs deer after theowner has been notified. I have a black lab and i would be sick if she accidentally got loose and some "hunter" got ticked an shot her! I can see both sides, but give the dog and their owners a chance! The dog is only doing what it is supposed to, Hunt! Itis their instinct. But the owners do need to keep the dogs under control.

Perhaps I was a bit too abrasive in my last post. It's guess it's best to use as much restraint as you can muster in handling dogs running in the woods. Every situation is different and some have a good reason to get mad as hell when they see a dog running loose on their property/lease. Just use caution, never know what the outcome might be.

ORIGINAL: rack tracker

It is things like this that make me feel embarresed to call myself a hunter.
I'm not ashamed to call myself a hunter, because the "person" who did this sure wasn't. I bet this wasn't an accident. That dog might have been running around outside of it's property and upset whoever did this. I remember many posts last year about this very subject. Shooting the animal wasn't the answer though.
