"One thing that has to be mentioned that it doesn't matter if it is a fixed head or mechanical there will be certain times when you absolutely pipe your shot through the vitals and you don't get much blood."

"It's not always the broadhead it's just the animal that has been shot."

The only possible reason that you would not get much blood from a perfectly hit animal is-A DULL BROADHEAD.(or maybe a mechanical head that failed to open).

You are 100% wrong! I have seen many animals, with all kinds of broadheads, be shot through the vitals and not have much blood while tracking.

I was in New Mexico on a 2 on 1 hunt and watchthe guy that I was with put a Muzzy right through the vitals and the elk left no blood.

It wasn't the BH's faultit was that the front leg was way forward and when he shot it the leg comes back and the entrance hole was covered up with the fat and muscle of the front leg.

I would agree with the fact that a dullblades will also cause smaller blood trails.

Annika, I'm afraid that I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree.

As previously posted there are three factors that determine how much blood will be left on the ground to follow:
1) Shot placement - a gutshot will never leave a great bloodtrail.
2) the presence of an exit wound - pass throughs will leave better bloodtrails because there are two holes to bleed from.
3) the sharpness of the broadhead - This to me is the single most overlooked or most taken for granted aspect of why good shots sometimes leave poor blood trails.

Broadhead manufacturers have been telling us for years that their blades are razor sharp and ready to hunt with right out of the box. We have heard it so many times that we often don't question this claim. The problem is that it is rarely true. Some brands are better than others but, frequently, even brand new replacement bladesneed to be sharpened.

I will have to stand by my original post that if you double-lung or heart shoot an animal (deer familly), and get a pass through, but no bloodtrail, then the only possible cause is that thebroadhead was not sharp enough.

I specificly said deer family animals becauseanimals like bears, Russian boars, and musk oxen that are thick furred often leave poor blood trails because the fur acts like a sponge and can soak up the blood as fast as it comes out. They may be bleeding like the proverbial "stuck pig" but the blood is not making it to the ground. -Sharps

Good shots don't always produce good blood trails. Hunt high and close to a trail. Shoot down. I have shot 6 or 7 where the entrance is high lung and exits where brown of hide meets white of belly. The deer never run over 60 yards and both lungs are taken out but........ The grissle and fat almost seal the exit shut. Only blood is from the entrance which is spotty.

I've killed 15 deer over the past 5 year with slicktricks and never had a deer run out of sight.

WOW!!,

Never thought it was such a hotly contested debate over mechanicals or fixed balde broadheads. It seems to be by all the posts is that what works best for one hunter is not for another. Thanks for all the info. Has anybody ever used the SONIC Heads. Small diameter broadhead but I was concerned about cutting diamter radius. If I want to maintain field point accuracy should I truly be concerned with size of cutting radius? Not trying to get everyone flustered but is this a big concern? Thanks

I would venture to say that I have taken asmuch game or more than mostwitha variety ofdifferent broadheads of both the mechanical and fixed blade flavor. All will do the job most of the time if placed in the right location.

After experimenting around with broadheads while Bowhunting for the last 40 years. I will only use fixed blade Broadheads on Big Game anymore. There is a reason for that

Many of theshort ferruled wide bladed broadheads have been tested and shown to fly like field tips. Slicktrick, Wac'em, G5, etc.

The Sonic follows the short ferrule design with a smaller diameter of head. It's really up to you what size head you want to use. However, the smaller the diameter the more accurate you have to be. You may slightly miss the vitals with a small diameter that you would have hit if the broadhead was a little wider. Just my $.02

Thanks for the info. I amalwaysconcerned about hitting a deer and not being able to locate it. I guess we are talking about a matter of an inch or less, that might be a sacrifice worth taking for excellent flight and accuracy. Thanks again.
