Default USA Knight & 209 primers ???

Could someone please answer a couple of questions. I just converted my Knight USA 50 cal. to the 209 ignition. After firing with the little red disc: can it be reused or trashed?.. Also can anyone give some good loads to start with. I will be shooting sabots. I have a good supply of lead and jacketed bullets from 180 to 350 grains. I also have pyrodex, 777, and black. Has anyone had really good luck with this rifle. Thanks in advance.

The USA Knight is very similar to my Wolverine II LK-93. The question of the little red disks I have heard you can reuse them. I still shoot the #11 caps and have no intention of changing.

The USA and Wolverine have the shorter 22" barrel. There is no need trying to push lots of powder through them. Mine just does not like heavy charges. Try shooting 85 grains of Pyrodex RS and a 250 grains sabot/bullet combination. The 300 grain Knight Red Hots and 90 grains of Goex FFg are an excellent shooting load in my rifle.

Currently I am working on some bigger loads for the rifle in the 375 grain class. The rifle seems to like the heavier sabots with 85-100 grains of powder. Knight products seem to shoot well out of them as do Barnes.

jimsham,

Just happened to see your question while sifting thru old messages. I recently ran very low on Knight disks(red). I reloaded 5-6 used ones.

If you haven't already tryed it - Don't! It's a pain in the butt!

Once that cap fires,it expands the disk and you gotta almost pound out the cap. I rushed out and bought a new pack @$10(difficult to find around here).

welcome to the site, you'll find this is a great place to get those little questions that pop up answered, chances are somebody on here has seen it or had it happen to them. on you question about the loads for your m/l er' i'd go with what cayugad mentioned, most people burn more powder than the barrel can use, all your really doing is throwing a big fireball out the end of the barrel, i have two m/ler's capable of 150 gr charges and i shoot 100 out of both, if you using pellets you can mix and match the pyrodex like a 50 and a 30, or three 30's or 2 50's like i shoot, and have a 80,90, or 100 gr load if you want to use pellets. good luck and good shootin

AJ is right on. I kept all my old ones. And in a pinch could not get out the old primer.

I'll give another call to cayugad's recommendations too. I shoot a USAK with the #11 caps and I've found my best loads to be:

300gr Sabots with 80gr 2fg 777
350gr Sabots with 90gr 3fg 777
400gr Sabots with 100gr 3fg 777

These loads run about 1600fps and knock the living dog-snott out of every critter I've hit with 'em.

As far as bullet choice goes, I prefer those made by PRBullets but for the 300gr sabots, Hornady XTPs & SSTs and the Barnes MZs have shot VERY well too with that 80gr 777 charge.

Thats seems a little steap a load for 400gr sabots. I don't shoot over 120gr of 777 with 220gr sabots with ffg. I wouldn't go over 85gr of fffg 777 with a 400gr load.

A new sweet load worked up in this little 22" barrel beauty is 80 grains of Goex FFFg and a 250 grain Barnes Expander. The accuracy is hard to describe. I mounted a Bushnell Trophy RED DOT on the Wolverine and at 35 yards (the distance to where them rascals cross in front of my tree) it shoots a big hole.

I also got some excellent groups with 80 grains of Goex FFFg and a .458 diameter 405 grain Remington SP in an orange Knight sabot. Recoil is a little stiff but the accuracy is well worth it. These big boys really ring the steel back stop after passing through the sand trap....

bigcountry........

I won't deny that my 100gr 777/400gr sabot load has a lot of recoil.....................heck, it kicks like a mule on crack! But it is safe and it shoots to the same point of impact as the other 2 loads and is EXTREMELY accurate. It's not something I shoot a lot of, I developed it for my dream buffalo hunt whenever I can make that happen.

But the 1st animal I shot with this rifle (a Corsican Ram) was taken using a 400gr PR ExtremeHP sabot and 125gr of CleanShot powder and it flipped "Curly" over in the air when it hit. And I used those 400gr sabots upon the recommendation of Cecil at PRBullets and betting against that man's recommendations is a BAD bet - he's the WIZ!!!!
