I have heard you can put electrical tape over the barrel to keep stuff out and shoot through it. Is this true? Tham\nks Phil 3 days to my first BP day.

I have never used electrical tape although I heard some use it. I just take some handi wrap, cling wrap, whatever yo have in the kitchen and a small rubber band. Stretch the cling wrap over the end of the barrel and keep it there with the rubber band. Take another small piece and put that over the cap under the hammer and it will help keep that dry too...

Yes it will work with no problems. I know a few people that use it all the time with all their guns.

I bought some of those "barrel condoms" as we call them :-) I have never shot through one, but they are made for this and I guess they work. You can buy these little guys at most sport shops in the muzzle loader area. They are black and look just like the description I mentioned...

I used the barrel condom this past weekend, and I will go back to using tape. I actually prefer short strips of black duct tape rather than electrical tape, but that is my preference. I found that when I pulled enough tension on the balloon to seal off the muzzle, the balloon started tearing. I also noticed that it would tear if you bumped your muzzle against a tree or put your gun barrel down in the truck. May be because my gun has a octagonal barrel, but I wasn't impressed. The little pink nipple rings that come in the same package as the barrel condoms that seal your cap are pretty neat though. I have also found that a 9mm casing will fit completely over the nipple of my sidelock, and is held in place by pressure from the hammer. A .22 Short also fits perfectly over a #11 cap. You just have to remove it when you cock your gun.

Yeap it works, I do it all the time with my Ml and Cf's.

Didn't we just finish hashing this over recently? YESS!! IT"S TRUE!! Air pressure building up ahead of the bullet when you fire will pop the tape off, but it has to be OVER the muzzle, NONE IN it!

A wrapping of Saran wrap or a condom is actually more waterproof, and you can wrap the plastic stuff around the lock/nipple or lock/frizzen/cock/pan area too, and your rifle will fire after a week in the rain!!

The electrical tape works over the barrel.I use saran wrap over my nipple if I want to leave my rifle loaded over night.Just set the hammer down on it.
