I've been wanting to get into bp shotguns and was looking at the Cabela's bp double barrel shotgun in their catalog. Does anyone have one of these? Who makes it for cabela's? What kind of quality is it? Where can I find literature on bp shotgunning? Load data, how to's, and so on. Thanks.

Not sure who makes it for Cabela's. I have one that is made by Navy Arms. It's pretty well made.I will warn you though. It kicks like a mule.I use 110grs of BP and 10 36 caliber RB's in each barrel. Believe me when it goes off you will know it without a doubt.Mine is the magnum model.I believe it was Navy Arms that did or is still making a lighter model. That one for sure kills on one end and cripples on the other.Ruger Redhawk

Get a Dixie Gun Works catalog. It has a ton of information in it about shotguns. They also sell everything you need for black powder. They have a web site. The Cabelas gun is a good one if you like choke tubes on a black powder gun.

I have been thinking about geting a BP shot gun allso. I am split between the 12 and 10 ga. Which on do you think would be best? And could you load it saftly with 44 cal round balls "the .451 dim. for the 44 cap and ball handguns"

They are made for Cabelas by Pedersoli, at least they were when I ordered mine. I ordered, and sent back three of them. The first came with corrosion all over the barrel, the second came with a small split in the wood of the forearm, the third had about a 20# trigger pull,(no lie), and the left side hammer was cock-eyed and pulled the cap off when you tried to cock it. It's been a number of years, maybe the quality is better now, or maybe I had just plain bad luck. Just thought I'd pass this along to you.

Thanks for all the input. 1950kid, I am waiting on the DGW catalog to show up on my door any day. I had a friend of mine tell me to get one because I would really like to try my hand at assembling a kit bp shotgun and he said that he thought DGW offered a few quality shotgun kits. It's funny you would mention the choke tubes because I thought that was odd myself for a traditional looking gun to have screw in chokes. It also caught my fancy because I will use the gun for everything from doves to turkey and I thought that the option of the xtra full choke would be handy. What would the max effective range of a cyl. bore gun be on a turkey? 25-30yds. max? The reason I am so full of questions is I have never owned or fired a bp shotgun. I've been into the rifles for a long time but never got the urge for the shotgun until recently.

Choke tubes probably won't be a problem if you take them out and clean them too everytime you clean the shotgun. I would think 25 yards would be possible with a cylinder bore gun. The best thing is to get a roll of wide paper and shoot different loads.
Try different combinations of wads, shot, and powder.
