Txfireman, I prefer a 500 yard muzzleloader. YOU can use YOUR centerfire ifYOUR ML isn't up to it. To each his own! I have killed 120-150 deer with muzzleloaders, handguns, recurves, compounds, shotguns, and rifles since 1961, Shot 9 bears with a bow, each bear bigger than the one before, have shot flying pheasants and geese with a bow, AND I DON'T NEED SOMEONE FROM TEXAS TELLING ME WHAT KIND OF WEAPON I NEED TO SHOOT!
Hey, I think you may have touched a nerve! LOL!! The last time anyone listened to a Texan, it cost us a trillion dollars! LOL!! Donn

I have dabbled awhile in the non traditional inlines by way of a Savage ML10II using smokeless charges. Just as prior to playing with a smokeless shooter, I have believed our MLs are only as good as the projectiles we stuff down them and they are thelimiting factor due to their poor BC's. Adding more or different powders don't change that enough to extend the range or even compare to a CF which has bullets of 2 - 3x the BC value.IME they are unpredictable and need a lot ofcorrection even at light wind conditions...500 yardsnot a chance for me.

As an example here is a real ballistic data from a load I worked through my savage over my chrony:

Bullet: 300gr SST BC.210
Powder: smokless H4198 70gr by weight
Primer: Fed 209A
Range Conditions: Clear/ 41 F/ NNW 10m.

Ballistics recap ran through my ballistics program based using myactual data :

Ave MV @ 15 feet: 2460FPS producing 3998ft/lbs
100: +3" 2066fps/2843 - wIND DRIFT 1.1"
200: 0" 1720fps/1970 - WD 8.4"
250: -5.9" 1563fps/1627 - WD 13.8"
300: -15.3" 1420fps/1344 - WD 20.7"
350: -29.1 1294fps/1116 - WD 29.5"
400: -48.0 1187/938 - WD 40"
450: -73.2 1102/868 - WD 52.4"
500: -105.4 1037/716 - WD 66.3"

In reality I only shot this load to 300 yards butthought itmight help illistrate my above comments. Comes out like a lion but still drops to a putty tat very quickly. At 500 yards I wouldn't consider the energy level enough for our larger bodied deer, never mind needing to compensate for over 8' of drop and 6' of wind drift.

Trying to compare such a load to a 300 wby...um not close. My 300wby/200 gr Nosler partition loads produced3100 fps MV and at 500 yards it still carried 2100fps/2000 ft/lbs. Drop (-36") and wind drift (18").

Not sure where your facts or numbers are frombut they just don't jive in my head, which isbased onmy experience and actual data collected from my firearms.

I am truly glad you found a ML you love, believe in and enjoy. Good Luck

This doesn't sound like spam/advertisement does it? New guy shows up with this much experience and knowledge about a cutting edge gun, askes a question that he should probably know the answer to already.....
I guess I am just one of those paranoid types.

Everyone to their own end I guess. Some M/Lers are happy with their hawkins shooting inside 100 yards and others are happy with their Encores out to 200.

Me, personally, past 200 I am using my 308 or my 300 WM. But, that's just me.

The cartridge case thing sounds like it would make the gun illegal in some of the stricter states.

Hank
I get upset when people jump into a conversation without checking out all the posts to a thread. On the first page of this thread I posted a website formthis gun:http://www.ultimatefirearms.com/

This is not spam and the gun does exists. Now again, please go to this site and read about this gun and come back and think about maybe giving Donn an apologize because you made a mistake.

rafsob,
No apologies here.
Wasn't insulting anyone or being mean, just making an observation as several folks have. Most of the back arching has come from trophy when his product is questioned.
Before I posted I did go to the website and looked at what they offered. The gun is certainly real, looks nice and has a very hefty price tag. I still have doubts about the accuracy claims.

But, I stick by my original statement. It very much seems that trophy1 is on a mission to spam a product than anything else. All of us have our favorite gun, powder, primer, etc and often disagree on what is best for this or that situation. However, the whole attitude here is of a person trying to put out an infomercial on a product. Just read back through the whole thread, you'll see what I mean. And, whenever anyone asks questions about the gun, loads, capability, etc, another infomercial. If anyone is skeptical, an attack back. No thanks.

Anyway, I am tuning out of this commercial. While the gun is pretty and has an interresting concept, it isn't for me.

Hank

Skeeter...thanks for the info about your Savage. At 500 yards with 200gr of Pyro and a 300 gr Hornady SST the Ultimate still has over 1000 lbs. energy. That could, in the hands of a real marksman (that leaves me out!) make for some tasty backstraps. Good hunting to you. Donn

Its a great looking gun. It is to costly for the average person to spend that kind of money I think. The biggest problem I see is how many states would allow this to use during the muzzleloading seasons. I would say not many.
