Default RE: Ultimate muzzleloader

I have dabbled awhile in the non traditional inlines by way of a Savage ML10II using smokeless charges. Just as prior to playing with a smokeless shooter, I have believed our MLs are only as good as the projectiles we stuff down them and they are thelimiting factor due to their poor BC's. Adding more or different powders don't change that enough to extend the range or even compare to a CF which has bullets of 2 - 3x the BC value.IME they are unpredictable and need a lot ofcorrection even at light wind conditions...500 yardsnot a chance for me.

As an example here is a real ballistic data from a load I worked through my savage over my chrony:

Bullet: 300gr SST BC.210
Powder: smokless H4198 70gr by weight
Primer: Fed 209A
Range Conditions: Clear/ 41 F/ NNW 10m.

Ballistics recap ran through my ballistics program based using myactual data :

Ave MV @ 15 feet: 2460FPS producing 3998ft/lbs
100: +3" 2066fps/2843 - wIND DRIFT 1.1"
200: 0" 1720fps/1970 - WD 8.4"
250: -5.9" 1563fps/1627 - WD 13.8"
300: -15.3" 1420fps/1344 - WD 20.7"
350: -29.1 1294fps/1116 - WD 29.5"
400: -48.0 1187/938 - WD 40"
450: -73.2 1102/868 - WD 52.4"
500: -105.4 1037/716 - WD 66.3"

In reality I only shot this load to 300 yards butthought itmight help illistrate my above comments. Comes out like a lion but still drops to a putty tat very quickly. At 500 yards I wouldn't consider the energy level enough for our larger bodied deer, never mind needing to compensate for over 8' of drop and 6' of wind drift.

Trying to compare such a load to a 300 wby...um not close. My 300wby/200 gr Nosler partition loads produced3100 fps MV and at 500 yards it still carried 2100fps/2000 ft/lbs. Drop (-36") and wind drift (18").

Not sure where your facts or numbers are frombut they just don't jive in my head, which isbased onmy experience and actual data collected from my firearms.

I am truly glad you found a ML you love, believe in and enjoy. Good Luck
