Default See through mounts

I have a new T/C omega Z5. I just bought a Nikon prostaff 2x7x32 to mount on it. I hope it will be a good scope. Anyone have any advice on the see through mounts? The owner of the gun shop was really pushing me towards getting them. Having the option to shoot from the open sights would be nice. But does the added height from the see through mounts effect the usability of the scope? Any opinions would be appreciated. Also any opinions on the Nikon Prostaff 2x7x32 scope? Seems to be a decent scope for the money.

Thanks,
Eric

You have a 2X setting. Look through that and you can see the sights. So what is the advantage of a see through mount? I want my scope as close to the barrel as possible. That will reduce vibrations to the scope, it will also stop the neck stretching that can happen when you have see through mounts. Also of the rifles that I have them on, I never use the see through aspect of it. Now some people really like them. I just never use them. I can practice and pull that scope up as fast as I could with see through. When I stalk, I use the 2X setting. On stand I use the 7X setting.

As for the scope, I really like the Nikon Pro Staff. I use the same scope on two different muzzleloaders and I think they are an excellent value. Instead of see through mounts, I would go with Warne QD quick release rings. Then you can take the scope off if you want to clean the rifle, or hunt with open sights.

I HAVE SEE THROUGH SIGTH ON MY SHOTGUN WITH THE SAME SCOPE. I DONT HAVE ANY TROUBLE WITH THE HIEGTH OF THE SCOPE AND BEING ABLE TO USE THE IRONS FOR CLOSE OR RUNNIG DEER IS A BENIFIT.

Been using scopes for way over 40 years now and never had a see-through mount until a couple weeks ago. I have a Traditions Pursuit Pro that has very high sights on it, and I couldn't get a scope to clear the rear sight. I decided to try a see-through mount, so I bought a set of T/C Gorilla Grip bases & rings. Put them on, and to be completely honest don't even notice the added height when shooting. I always thought they'd be a poor setup, but so far they seem to be just fine on that rifle. Shot a deer with it in gun season and never even thought about the see-through rings being there. (and I even put the bullet just where I wanted it!)

I like them on my shotgun and ML since I usethem late season and when I hunt the mid west. I like having it especially when it is snowing real hard. No scope covers to keep messing with and if the scope does get snowed in shoot through the irons.

Like Cayugad said. First thing i do with a new gun is take off the iron sights if there are any on it.i put on the lowest scope mounts and rings that the scope will allow.Too many folks turn that variable scope as high as it will go and then are unable to get on a deer close in. IMO:A high powered scope on a muzzleloader is like racing slicks on a2 1/2 ton Army truck.WWII snipers made some very long kills with scopes that ranged from 2.5 to four power.

For me it is so much easier to pick upa running hog or deerin a scope than it is with iron sights.

You have a good gun and a good scope, don't screw it up by putting see through mounts on it...Not only do you not need open sights if you know how to use a scope, the see through mounts are not as strong as a good set of Leupolds or Weaver mounts, so your zero will change, especially with harder kicking guns...

I agree with Dave and a couple of others; I had a see through on a .308 rifle and never could get the thing to be of any use. It also made the height of the scope uncomfortable. I would not use one ever again. Of course I am also old enough that I can't see the iron sights very good anyway. When I had the see through I could but never could get lined up fast enough for them to be of use. It just made getting the scope online slower also.

I have a Nikon 2-7 x32 on my Omega. Love that scope. Have it mounted low. As far as see thru mounts go, i have them on my centerfire rifle, been on there many years, and i have ALWAYS used the scope. With the scope dialed down all the way there is no need for see thru mounts imo.
