Original Renegade

How many of you have the original Renegade rifle? What do you like about it? I like the quality and design. I also like how it is light weight and shorter (26" barrel). I have an early 70's model that my grandpa hunted with and gave me. Now I think I am going to get a flintlock Renegade. I like the 1" across the flats since you can change out with a lot of GM barrels and have up to a 62cal or maybe larger.
So just wondering what you all like about your Renegade. Awesome rifle!

Im not sure what year my renegade i had was made but as for being light weight? 8lbs felt pretty heavy. Mine was 1" across the flats and top heavy. Good shooting rifle but i dont miss it. It just had tomuch of a modern feel to it.

Sharp Shooter
I have 3 of them but one does not really count because it is a much newer gun, still has the set trigger so it is not a Renegade Hunter. The other two are back there a ways... one was a kit gun the other is a regular over the counter Renegade.
I like the Rene because it is a plane Jane gun - no fancy brass - it is more like what I might envision the old ones using. same reason I like my trade rifle... And as you have mentioned I really like the shorter barrel. It carries really easy for me especially as compared to a Hawken.
I do not really know - i just like em....

I have to agree with you. The Thompson Center Renegade (not the Renegade Hunter) is my favorite rifle. The double set triggers and fast action. They are a real meat and potatoes kind of rifle. They handle fast, point well, are balanced, and have always done what I needed them to do. Although, I like the Thompson Center Hawkins a little better as far as recoil absorption. Renegades with a stiff powder charge can really smack me in the cheek.

For some reason my Renegade never gets me on the cheek. Even shooting 100gr FFG and a 425gr Great Plains Conical. I must hold it differently. It doese get my dad when he shoots it though. Renegades are great rifles. Just like what sabotloader said, it is plain jane rifle you might picture to me similar to what the old ones use.

In any traditional style rifle, when ever possible, I always try to get a .54 caliber. Not that the .50 caliber can not get the job done mind you. I just believe that when shooting such things as roundball, the additional weight and even the small increase in the overall diameter of the projectile will make a down range difference.
I have four Renegades (although the nephew has his eye on one of them) and there is not a bad shooter in the bunch. Also none of them are the Renegade Hunter model that came out with the single trigger. While I have nothing against a single trigger, I like the double set trigger better.
The Renegade and Hawkins made by Thompson Center are my favorite in traditiional rifles although my Traditions, CVA, and Lyman are also excellent shooters and function perfect.

Great rifle. Mine also like the Hornady 425gr. Great Plains bullets with either Pyrodex or APP. Mine is a pre Hunter model with double set triggers. Wht makes mine special to me is its a left handed rifle. I shot my brothers righty and didn't care for the blowback in my face.

I just bought a renegade this winter. Its a left handed 54 and was a kit gun. It looked like it had been sitting on the shelf for a very long time. I picked it up for 217 dollars i think it was. It has the set trigger as well.
