MOVING YOUR REAR SIGHT

I have waited to add my answer because I didn't know if what I did was kosher. The last ML I pieced together - I decided to do just what you are suggesting. I got a white Green Mountain barrel blank, and I decided that I would move the rear sight forward because of my eyes. I only needed to move it about 2" but it certainly did help. I really enjoy shooting that Hawken even with low light now.

thanks all. you dont know how much this makes me feel. i feel like kid again because i can shoot open sights again.that v-peep from rmc really helped and i feel moving it forward wil help me see rear sight better.6 and 1/2 inchs is to close for my eyes.will let you all know where it clears up for me.

my barrel length is 29 inchs on my t/c hawkins.original sights were at 6 and 1/2. i moved it slowly out towards the front sight and at 14 inchs it got 90% clear.the only thing is the front sight now fills up the v-peep ,not bad but not as much room as when it was at 6 and 1/2.actually ,i think it gives you at tighter sight which may improve your shots as there is only a little room to wander now inside the v-peep.before you could move front sight around inside peep.going to try it out side on tuesday to see how it works with sun ,woods , etc.

my rear sight on my t/c hawkins is about 6 and 1/2 inchs from breech.i have v-peep from rmc.it is blurry.rmc said this is normal and as long as front sight is clear, no problem. i would still like clear rear sight. after moving it out to 10-12 inchs towards the front sight, it gets clear. did any of you ever move your rear sightand was there a problem. my gunsmith says this is what you should do as our eyes get worst with age.i think i will do it but thought i would ask before having it done.

Moving the rear sight further away from your eye will make it easier to see both front & rear clearly, and this is where I place mine when building a rifle. However, there is the distinct disadvantage of shortening the sight radius when you do this, which causes the effect of any misalignment of the sights to be magnified compared to the same amount of misalignment with a greater distance between the sights. However, I personally prefer to see both sights clearly, so am willing to accept the effects of theshorter sight radius.

i agree too.i like to see both clear. i did notice that the front sight starts to fill up the v-peep as you move it out towards front sight.thanks for that info.
