my rear sight on my t/c hawkins is about 6 and 1/2 inchs from breech.i have v-peep from rmc.it is blurry.rmc said this is normal and as long as front sight is clear, no problem. i would still like clear rear sight. after moving it out to 10-12 inchs towards the front sight, it gets clear. did any of you ever move your rear sightand was there a problem. my gunsmith says this is what you should do as our eyes get worst with age.i think i will do it but thought i would ask before having it done.

Our old eyes (or any for that matter) cannot focus on on 3 things at the same time, rear, front, target, The focus has to be on the front sight (not with a shotgun). That is whypeep sights have such an advantage over open sights, you just look through them. For open/peep sights gun fit is very critical especially for a running target. When I was growing up (long time ago) the rule of thumb for gun fit was pick up a rifle and shootas fast you can at a 5 gallon bucket without aiming,If you can hit it then the gun fits. With scopes and treestands and today's type of hunting this isn't very important.

There are a lot of opinions out there,I have a book on building riflesthat dates back to the early 1700's it says that the frount sight should be 14" from the eye for accurate shooting. Of course there have been a lot of technological advances, but sometimes I wonder if we haven't lost a few things too. Lee

i can see my front sight fiber optic green from rmc well inside the v-peep. but v-peep is blurry.green fiber optic is much better than red one.closer you move rear sight or front sight to my eye the blurrier it gets.i am still debating if it would make sense to move the rear v-peep forward towards the front sight.it is 6 and 1/2 from my eye now which is normal place of the original rear sight from factory on t/c hawkins.my gunsmith does it all time on hunting rifles but has not done it to a muzzleloader. its funny, when i was young the rear aperature on my hunting rifle was like 3 inchs from my eye.now, older eyes and anything closer than 10 inchs to my eye gets blurry.

i go to eye doctor every 16 months .wearing glasses sense 10 years old.doctor told me, do you want to see good FAR away or CLOSE.i said FAR away.then he gave me reading glasses for close and bi-focals on glasses.at 12 years old hunting i wore glasses. i could see sights clearly. now, same rifle ,same peep sight from 40 years ago on gun, its blurry on the aperature. i guess our eyes get bad close as we age.here is what most are doing on their rifles. they are moving sights CLOSER to front sight.or they are buying .75 power reading glasses and using them to see rear sight if they dont move it. before i move my rear sight FORWARD i was wondering if anyone has done this on muzzleloader and results of it.

I belong to a traditional only site and this topic has come up a few times. Not only is it ok to move the sight forward it is even considered "PC" because there are many examples of this being done. People back then bought a rifle for life and they had no choice but to move the sights when they could not see then anymore. People have found rifles with more than two notches filed into the barrel as the sights were moved forward for better sight picture.
I would say go for it if it helps and you really like your rifle. You may ask you eye doctor if he can help you fint the right focal point.
