External Elk calls

gselkhunter, I would like to hear the story sometime. It sounds like you are quite the hunter of sorts too. I enjoy hunting several other species myself. Elk will always be king in my books though. The screams in sept. are what I live for. Did you ever get a chance to see the Colorado hunter magazine when it was being published?

No I didn't, how many times are you in there Elkcrazy8? Just FYI, from 88-95 I shot Bowhunter class 3Ds in Colo. I ranked in at #3, but I get the feeling that I can't compete with you Elkcrazy8. But I don't need a range finder because of that.

gselkhunter, I wasn't in the Colorado hunter magazine but it was a sister magazine for the Idaho hunter magazine in which I was affiliated with. The magazine sold and is now the trail of the sportsman. I no longer am part of it. I was just curious if you have heard of it. As far as the bowshoots. I took the Idaho state shoot last year in the bowhunter class and shot in the nw triple crown and ended up #6. I plan on changing that this year. I have been shooting in 2 different leagues this year and now have a coach. I don't have the opportunity to go to the worlds this year due to time and $ as I didn't last year. The year after this year I want to go back to see what it is like(Snowshoe Virginia). I have also been shooting some NFAA and have enjoyed that almost as the IBO. As you may already know I am divorced and my daughters live with their mother in NV. I have ALOT of extra time on my hands and I spend it hunting and shooting. It is almost the only thing that I do. I am by no means a natural archer. I used to have the worst target panic that you have ever seen. I have just been lucky(or unlucky) to have alot of time to spend on what I love. I managed to pick up two sponsors last year and hope to gain more this year. If not, I will just shoot and hunt for me. That is what it is truly about anyway. I don't like to shoot aginst other people and when I shoot a tournament, I am just trying to better myself. When is the Colorado state shoot. I might think about coming down and checking it out.

gselkhunter got you're info on the program it gives me a lot of ideas, and a place to start making and practicing my own program. I assume you learn it by heart so it comes natural in the competition?
Elkcrazy8 when do you go back east to hunt whitetalls? And by the way do you think they make a big enough suit case to sneek me with you on a Alaska Trip. lol just kidding? It's a dream for me as well to hunt Alaska Brown Bears, with a bow! I sometimes wish I had your time to spend on hunting and shooting. But on the other hand it would kill me to give up my Daddy time with my kids. I can tell you love your kids very much and I hope your ex lets you see them as offten as possiable. Hope you get to see them for the holidays!

idahoelkinstructor,I get to see my daughters on Monday. I haven't seen them since July, I can't wait, spoiling them pretty good this x-mas. I am heading to Nebraska this Oct. to hunt with Jerry Sanford(stealthman on here). He is coming out in Sept to hunt elk with me. I used to hunt white-tails all the time growing up in NY. It will be fun to chase them a bit. I know we have white-tails out here but it will be cool to hunt someplace else for a change. As for the browns, hopefully next year or the year after. I will be going with a guy on here that you see from time to time ,his "computer handle" is kodiman.
gselkhunter, that yardage judging really helps the hunt doesn't it. I still use a rangfinder when I hunt but there are times that you need to make a fast decision and it really helps to know the yardage. I practice all the time on the riverpath that runs by my house. I take my rangefinder and practice on benches, garbage cans, telephone poles etc. It really has helped my confidence in the woods. The first bull I ever shot at I used my 50 yard pin on a 20 yard bull. At that time I couldn't remember if I needed to use the top or the bottom. This whole elk hunting thing has been a huge learning experience through the years. I don't think that one can ever stop learning more about elk and hunting in general. There is always something new out there.
Everyone, thanks for sharing your knowledge, I can't wait to take some of it in the woods with me this year.

You guys might find this interesting, I was a rock & ice climber for years. Took a bad fall in 79, broke a lot of stuff, should be dead. Got married in 83, the big D in 86. To save what was left of my brain jumped into fly fishing, then bow hunting and yes I fly fish like I hunt and call. Not only did I do the 3D thing, but ran hills looking for elk and stump shooting. It was the stump shooting that really groomed me. I shot so many arrows at over 60yds, 40 yds to me is 20yds to target archers. To improve my form, I practice at 80yds. If you can shoot 6 inch groups at 80yds, you are right on the money. The funny part is it was an olympic shooter that showed me how to do it. He didn't hunt, just shot a bow. And let me tell you what this guy can shoot, I will never be that good. So Elkcrazy8, you are doing the right thing, you too can save your brain and I can't think of a better way. At least when you scream at an elk and they scream back it is a fight you have a chance of winning! Idahoelkinstructor, hope it helped, I will see you in Salt Lake.

Sorry to bring up an old post, it was just brought to my attention and I felt I needed to reply to set the story a little straighter...
Elkcrazy8 said "I called against Corey at the super shoot in New Meadows quite a few years back. I found out later that his dad was one of the judges. I called BS on the deal and he told me that he could not tell if his son was calling or not."
I have called in one contest in which my Dad was the judge, and coicidently, I won. It was not in New Meadows however, it was in Lewiston, ID at a sports and RV show. There were 4 judges there, and they threw my Dad's score out when I bugled. If they had kept it, the guy I beat by one point would have beaten me, as my Dad scored me low :-( There were only 3 contestants and everyone agreed ahead of time that it would be fair to do it that way. I think I was 16 at the time.
Chad, you must have me confused with someone else, as I have only bugled in New Meadows 3 times. Twice my Dad and I tied, as he was bugling in the same contest, and once when my Dad wasn't there (I think I got 3rd...). Other than the time I bugled in Lewiston, I have never called in a contest when my Dad was a judge. And my Dad would never say he couldn't tell me from the other buglers...
My Dad has judgedthe contest at New Meadows once or twice, but never when I bugled there. Anyway, just wanted to set the record straight and make sure you didn't think I was going around entering contests when my Dad was a judge.Good luck with the 3-D and hunting Chad, maybe we'll be able to meet up at a contest one of these days!
Take care,
Corey

Hi Chad,
Absolutely no reason to apologize, I'm just wondering if maybe you had me confused with someone else back then? I do remember hearing about a fuss with my Dad being a judge one year and someone using his calls winning the contest. If I remember correctly, it was Steve Stephenson (tied with Ron Gaines?), and it was around 97 or 98. As I mentioned, I have bugled 3 times there. The first time (1990?)my Dad beat me in a tie-off, the second time (96 - 97?)I placed 3rd. That year they had the generator running right in front of where we were bugling, and a guy with a power bugle won. The last time (98 - 99?)was when it was sponsored by the RMEF and my Dad and I tied again.
Robinhood36, yes I went up to Hitt Mtn last weekend, it was my second 3D shoot in 4 years...I just don't get out to them much anymore...and my score showed it... :-(
I'm not sure if I'll make it to Stanley or not, I'm getting the itch again, but it happens every year when hunting season gets closer. If I can find time to shoot my bow between now and then, I might try.If for some reason I do make, there will be no head butting with Chad, and I say the winner buys the drink with the winnings! I'd be more than happy to if I was lucky enough to win, and I'd take a pop from Chad if he beat me as well!
Just to clarify, there are no hard feelings and I apologize if I came across a little too defensive in the first post.
