I could get into that if I was younger. To old to keep up now. Training the dogs to hunt, and then treeing a bear, or cat. That would be fun. It's the shooting the animal when it's treed that bothers me.

Yes, make the hunt fun for your son, but please as he gets older show him other ways to hunt. Let him make up his mind on what method he likes best.
He's been hunting whitetails in the big woods of PA since he was 6 years old. He knows what a wild hunt is. He knows all about getting busted. He also knows what it's like to not see anything and get skunked. In the early season, he sees deer that are out of range. He sees deer that are in heavy cover and cannot shoot.

Rememeber, we have no bait or dogs in PA. It's just us and the animal. This is how we hunt. A trip out-of-state is a special occasion.

There's no spot and stalk where we hunt. When you can't see 10 feet, it's kind of hard to spot. Bear live in cover you have to crawl through. There's no watching them feed on a grassy slope with our binoculars.

So, in all of Pa. You can only see 10ft?

I was born and brought up in Mass. My dad took me hunting in all the New England states including yours. We still hunting all of them, and did well.

Not exactly what I was talking about though. I said all methods of hunting. All you seem to do is make excuses about why you can't do something. You went to Canada, and hunting over bait. Was that all you could do there too, or was it just the easiest?

I don't care how you hunt, but please don't tell me you hunt a certain way, because that's the only way an area can be hunted. Just say you hunt your way, because you want to.

That is where the bears live. And, our property was clear cut about 20 years ago, so most of the area is extremely thick. I'm just saying that we don't spot and stalk bears where I hunt. We hunt them in heavy cover. When it's only you, that generally means you pick a stand on the edge of the cover and hope for the best. Other guys put on drives, but I don't hunt bear with a big group.

We hunted with an outfitter and this is the only way they hunt. the guide drives you off and puts you in a stand and picks you up after dark. That's the only choice.

I don't know what to tell you. We hunt our property which is very thick. We stand hunt because that's what works the best. Spot and stalk doesn't work. I've actually lost track about how we got to this point. I think it had to do with me defending those who hunted with bait or dogs in states that allow it. Our state does not so we do not hunt with either. You mentioned an article or a show where someone got a bear in Alaska through spot and stalk. That's great. If I was in Alaska or British Columbia, I would do the same.

I won't hunt black bears out of state because we have them here. I got one several years ago and that's off my bucket list. i just wanted my son to get one and he was not old enough to hunt bear in PA at first as mentored youth can't hunt bear. So, we looked out of state. They hunt over bait. Oh well, that seemed like an easy hunt for a young kid. Plus, they had fishing in the morning.

muley, not everyone has the same drive and desires you do, the dogs we put on bears do the running and such, they do a lot for us, now.....who the hell ya think taught them to hunt, we hunt with dogs cause of the way it makes you feel when you start with a bumbleing 8 week old pup and make him a bear dog. all you wanna do is get in on every thread and display your holier than though attitude, hunt how ya want, we don't care, but you have no idea about the terrain, the hows or the whys of the methods we use. ya just wanna be arguemenative.

I already said training and running the dogs would be fun. Try reading all the posts before you accuse me of being argumentative.

What do you think your post was?

Personal insults aren't facts. None of it was done until you showed up.

It's your style though, so it's no surprise.

LOL..You got that backwards. I told him the opposite.

Actually, I never told him to do anything. I said he could have.

Then I said like I always do, but you always ignore. I don't care how anybody hunts.

Just so you know. This quote of yours is an insult. Especially, when it isn't true.

" all you wanna do is get in on every thread and display your holier than though attitude"

I'm done here. (you can have the last word)
