Default Food Plot Equipment Question

Finallygetting the time to start preparing some food plots on my property in Ohio. I don't have the space to store a ton of equipment and I already own a 22 HP Garden Tractor so I was looking intothose multi-tow behind tools. I was really impressed with the DR Roto-Hog Power tiller with optional seeder and culti-packer. The remote control is a pretty spectacular feature as well.

They are a little pricey, about $3,000 with all the options delivered to my door, but I figure I'm already ahead with not needing an ATV or tractor. Does anyone have any experience with these? I could not find any reviews anywhere on these. I'd be interested in hearing some of your opinions on this and some other multi-purpose equipment.

Looks a little lightly built IMHO. It might be alright on sandy type soils especially if you kept a tight control on grasses that cangive a roto tiller problems. The seeders like that I have used spread the over a wider strip than the cultipacker will cover also, the next pass you will be tilling seeds you put out on the previous pass. It says a 36 inch tilling width, which might be alright if you are putting in just a couple of smaller plots. You could hire somebody to put the plots in for a lot of years for $3,000 using disc and a grain drill. Those are just a couple of possible negatives, if you get one let everybody know how it works.

I would agree. All in one units tend to be under-built and over priced. You'd be much further ahead to attend some farm auctions and buy some used equipment. It'll be built to do the job properly, and will cost far less. Most equipment can be stored outside.

Thanks for the advice. I keep hearing that these small, all in one units tend to be too light. There are no shortage of farms around my place so I will have to stop and ask if thereare any equipment and operators for hire.

Looks like this thread was written a number of years ago, but this may be useful for any future readers... OMNI Mfg. sells cultipackers with a very simple, but strong design. They are well built all around. Also, they use ductile iron wheels (vs. regular grey iron). The reason for this being, ductile iron has 300% more tensile strength than grey iron. This is a quality, affordable product & I speak from experience. Check out their website...

Still seem kinda pricey for a small plotter. I have an old pull type disk I can use with the landowner's tractor or a pickup, and my buddy has a chunk of trailer ramp that we drag with his 4 wheeler. If I stick around this area longer, I'd like a cultipacker, but would probably watch for an auction or make one. An old yard roller works good for the smaller plots.

I don't know where you are from in PA but if you look at the "New Food plot ideas" thread, I posted a contact for a new and used farm equipment dealer who is from SE PA in Lebanon Co. he does business all over the US.
