The only time you could have salt in the piles is if there's any amount of it occuring naturally in the soil. It takes 20 years for a pine sawdust pile to decompose near the bottomand probably lesser time for hardwood sawdust to reach the same amount of decomposition. These lower levels of the pile are usually quite damp so maybe there's something there that attracts their attention.
