Default Is an apple-flavored salt lick considered "baiting"

Here's a quick question: All the stores carry deer feed, salt licks, corn treats, and all sorts of stuff for deer.

I was curious about buying a small apple-flavored salt lick and carefully placing it near the trail of my nice, special, "secret spot" in a public state forest. But then again, I was concerned if putting out some deer attractant is considered illegal and viewed as "baiting". What is the general rule?

Butch I read the regs for the commonwealth of VA and it appears to be illegal.

http://www.dgif.state.va.us/hunting/...lawful_Methods
I found this quote about 1/2 way down the page under unlawful methods.

Occupy any baited blind or other baited place for the purpose of taking or attempting to take any wild game bird or wild game animal or to put out bait or salt for the purpose of taking or killing any wild game bird or wild game animal, except for the purpose of trapping furbearing animals.

This is off the subject but I found it interesting. I VA it is illegal to
Hunt adjacent to forest fires.

ButchA, It is absolutely 100% illegal. you can even get a teicket for hunting near a sight that used to have a salt lick in it. If the warden suspects he will investigate and if he finds the hole and the use of it by deer he will cite you for baiting and hunting over a baited site.

Thanks guys.... That's what I was wondering.... I mean, look around, stores have zillions of types of deer attractants. If it's illegal, why are they selling it? Private land owners only?

I was just curious about this, that's all. Now it's just a simple case of "never mind"....

Marijuana is illegal but they are still able to sell zig zags and bongs.

Stores justify selling it because some people like to feed deer and take pictures and stuff I guess. I don't understand why it's illegal in some states to bait deer anyways. It's legal in Texas so most people do it.

If it's legal and everybody does it does that really give anyone an advantage over the other?
