It depends on where i hunt.
in the pastures long shot say 250 to 400 yards.i use my 7mm stw ,300 win mag or 25-06.
open timber ,pine fields. i use my 270,30-06, 6mm rem or 243.
thicker timber, bottoms. i use my 308, 30-06,or 44 mag.
well heck sometimes i just use whatevers on my mind before i go. i have been known to go to my stand with a 357 mag or a 41 mag. shotgun or bow or crossbow. i dont have a spear yet though. i just cant answer this question.
aint america great!

Even though I just purchased a Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow chambered in .270, I am still a sucker for my Marlin .336 Lever action chambered in .35 remington. I

I would go with a 7mm Mag. because of the flatter tragectory. But that might be a little big for what you are looking for. You might want to think about getting a .243. It's small but I know a few guys that have been using it on deer for years with much success. Plus, the difference between an 06 and a .308 is minimal. If you're thinkng about getting a .308, you much as well just stick with what you've got.
