what gun do u perfer in the field for whitetail?
I am just doing a poll because i might purchase a nother deer rifle and just wanted to see what most people prefer. i currently have a winchester 30-.06 and it works great but was thinking alittle smaller like a .308 or somthing that i could use on varmet. i use the 30-06 on varmet but does more damage than i want it too. but i like my 30-.06 it works great for deer and other big game but would like a smaller one too. your info is appreacted

If you want the best of both worlds, deer and varmint with one gun I have a 25-06 that is a real shooter! I have taken deer, pronghorn and Pa woodchucks out past 500 yards...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

In the field (or in the woods) I would choose the 7MM-08. The .308 would be another good choice, but in 7MM you have a better selection of nice varmint bullets, including the 100 gr Sierra Hollow Point.

I have a Winchester M70 Black Shadow in 7MM Rem. magnum. It is quickly becomming my favorite hunting gun. I also use a M70 in .308 Win. Both of these are great Whitetail guns. But if I were to buy another Whitetail gun, it would be the 7MM-08! I am very impressed with what I have seen this caliber do!

If I already had an '06 and I was looking for a smaller caliber to use strictly for deer, I would consider either the 7mm-08 or the .270. Both are excellent deer cartridges. .308 is great also, but not that much of a difference from the '06.

i use a 30-30 marlin w/scope on clear days when i might be in some clearcuts or open areas
but my pre64 32 win special open sites is my gun of choice. snow rain brush this is a shooter ive killed deer to 200 yards and it shoots 3 inch groups at 150. the old buckhorn sites are still the best.

They make a varmit bullet for a lot of different cal. I dont remember what they are called but they have smaller lead set in plastic. They don't do as much damage, my brother had some in 30-30 the lead was the size of a 222.
