how can you tell if its a big deer rubbing on a tree. Becasue today i was hunting in Montgomery county in Indiana and i was walking out and found a huge rub. And you see where his tines dug into the tree. I alyways find a rub like that every year for the past 4 years and its in the same area. thanks

I guess I always go by the old saying the bigger the tree the bigger the buck. But I always look for different signs around a big rub like how high did the rub get and how high were the branches he hit. Is he hitting smaller tree right next to meaning possibly a really wide rack. I guess that is what I look for when I see bigger rubs.

I agree with fur fish and game that you should look for the height and how wide the rack is. But the common thought that the bigger the tree the bigger the buck is a myth, there is no connection except for one particular circumstance that I cover in my book.

I am a wildlife biology major and from my knowledge so far many hunters believe that the bigger the tree the bigger the deer. Come to find out that really isnt true. Small bucks will hit big or small trees just the same as more mature whitetail. Though the majority of bigger rubs are made by mature bucks as a sign of dominance. Another way that might help distinguish is how high up on the tree the rub is. If there are tine marks up quite a ways on the tree then he probably has a fairly tall rack.

Yeah I look for how high it is... That will tell you how tall the deer is and maybe how big it is... and how tore up the tree is... IMO a smaller buck will not thrash the h#ll out of a tree big or small so if it is torn up REAL bad, then I' d like to think it was a bigger buck...

What about the type of tree? Around here they seem to like rubbing on the cedar trees mostly. Whats up with that? Not just any ole tree but cedars.
