Deer Drives vs Treestands
#2
i think, it depend where you put your tree-stand...
If you put your tree-stand in a tree, which you can see the deer drive, and always hunt with a good wind can give you some nice deers. Everything is depending of the area, the trees species, the density of the vegetation.. etc.
I think that deer drives gives more opportunity if you hunt with a good wind, but what do you mean with tree-stand? Hunting with feeder?

I think it greatly depends on what part of the phase your in during your gun season....For example, our season here in ohio is only a week long, I like to sit in a stand for at least the first 3 days, and when the activity slows down, or the deer are spooked, then do your drives to push out those wary bucks...If you do your drives first, your going to run through an area, leaving your scent and definitely pushing all the deer out of the woods, by the time the deer make their way back into that area, they will be spooked and educated...and it will take them a while to adjust back to their habits again...If you have a really long gun season, you have more room to work with, and you can go into an area multiple times

I suppose which is favorite depends both on the individual and the terrain you are hunting. The areas I hunt are real thick. I like to get deep into the bush to intercept them on their way back or to the bedding areas. Therefore for me using a treestand is far more effective. The big plus about stand hunting is that it is very peaceful and it gives me lots of time to contemplate everything in life as well as sitting quietly enjoying the nature that is around me. I have been on some successful drives but I prefer the peacefulness of stand hunting.

Both are excellent techniques. I have stand hunted most of my hunting career and have found that If you sit long enough and are patient, the right buck will come along. We dont usually drive untill Thanksgiving, if we have tags open. Other than that we usually just sit and it has always paid off for most of my group.

A well selected ambush location based on strategy, decided upon by extensive scouting and by simply doing your homework will always be the consistently productive tactic. It's more work but the pay off means sooooo much more when you've earned it!
Forced movement is a game of luck, throwing shots and often times more wounded deer than anyone should EVER need to deal with!
Thankfully it's a quickly dieing tactic in my area. A few ol' timers still try it but gone are the days of the large groups and dozens of shots fired as the deer run the gauntlets!Thank God! [:@]
