I agree with Rob. Doesn't matter who it was that shot the deer, they didn't do anything that makes the deer's rack theirs. It was a poor shot at a bad angle. Goober if you look at the hit and angle, I doubt that a rifle would have done any more damage than the slug. Nothing there that is a quick killer to the deer.

I agree with Rob too. You keep that rack Christine. That guy doesn't deserve it. If he was any kind of hunter he would've waited for a better shot, or took his time and actually made a better shot. I hate the thought of that animal suffering like that. What a way to go!

I called the guy (Bill) who lost a buck out thereand asked him what kind of slugs he was using and sure enough hesaid Brenneke's. I asked him just how big the buck was and he said "as wide as his ears with tall tines."

I told him to meet me out there and look at the rack and he did. He was almost 100% positive that it was the buck he shot.He looked relieved, a bit sad andhappy all atonce.

Hehas been searching for it ever since he hit it. I know he's been broke up over losing it. He's an older gentleman and doesn't get around so good and yet he's been walking the area several times a week, still looking. I know he feels bad that the deer went the way it did.

Hanging that rack on my wall wouldn't have done anything for me. I'd much rather keep the memory of Bill smiling and thanking me for the 3000th time.

But that's just me. I'm sappy that way.

You did a good thing ,and as the world is round what comes around goes around. Some day you will be on the receiving end of someone else doing the right thing.

Way to go Christine. You made the guy smile and now he's not wondering about that deer that he shot. Kudos to you, unlike some of the others who were happy to "kick" the guy for taking a "bad shot", how dare he.

You're a good woman Christine. Hat's off to you.

I guess I didn't look at it the way I should have. I was just thinking about the deer and how he probably suffered. But the deer's dead, and the guy obviously cared enough to keep up the search for it. Good for him, and very good of you to go through the trouble for him.

u matt - I agree that was prob a lonnggg shot......
I don't currently, but did use those slugs for 2-3 yrs and killed 2-3 deer.
What I do clearly remember is - that slug at 75-80 yrds pretty much turns everything to mush. The slug Christine pulled from deer sure looks like a long range lob shot - "spent slug" IMO.

Hey - send the carcus and/or deer to CSI Illinois. They will do a super criptic scan on slug along with flesh sampling and give you a 3 page report before next commercial break.

Actually, the shot was only about 40 yards.

He did say it hit the ground like a ton of bricks at the shot. He was really surprised to see it get up and run off.

I'm glad the guy has closure to the situation. Slugs can do weird things on deer.
