Here's a real bone head f***-up on behalf of a "hunter" that I saw in the paper this morning. Seems a young girl was out riding her horse on opening weekend up the driveway at her folks farm. Their 89 year old neighbor was sitting in a chair in his yard 200 yards away and threw a slug at the horse. Thought it was a deer? Let's think about this. A 200 yard shot with a slug gun at a horse with a rider. They it hit the horse. Don't know how it will fare. It's alive now. It actually wasn't a bad shot for a 6" + hold over but if he had been back and high that little girl may have taken the shot. They aren't thinking about pressing charges but I for one think it's time for one old man to hang up his guns.

Personally I have never had or know of any one who has had a hunting accident (knock on wood). I feel it is all in the idividuals and how the approch saftey. I have always hunted private land so I know exactly where everyone is at all times. I think a lot of accidents come from lack of care for saftey, and a lack of knowledge of what is around. I feel most accidents happen on public land where you have a lot of people with little knowledge as to where others are.

As stated above wear your orange, know your target AND whats beyond, watch your muzzle direction. If anyone in your party does less send them packing or leave yourself, its not an easy thing to tell a friend that you think they are irresponsible but its better than getting shot.
Most hunting accidents don't involve guns, one of our party went to the hospital last week because he got a sharp branch in the eye, but that could have happened if he was just hiking.
Respect the land, your host, the game, and your firearm, and you will be fine, if someone else doesn't show the same attitude speak up or leave. I see hunting in the same light as driving a car, everyone should have the opportunity to experiance it, but if they don't take it seriously they should be stopped for their own safety and the safety of others.
