400-500...also depends on the situation.....but I alot more comfortable with 300-400.

I practice 600 yard shots with Kentucky Windageand a .300 Weatherby. This year I've had two standing shots at 315 yards, they dropped dead standing.

I had a 468 yard shot at a doe in the prone position. Thirty seconds later I shot a deer at 422 yards. Both dropped in their tracks.

Don't ask me how but I missed a deer at 8 yards with a muzzle loader.

I have less anxious moments when the deer are some distance out. I've got a buddy who has the Kentucky State Record who shot a deer on the run at 510 yards last year and it piled up several yards from impact.

The last several years this has been the norm, of course it helpedto have a 23 year old son who was a sniper in Iraq. He has given this ol' man some pointers.

I only use a bow and shotgun. With a bow I wouldnt go farther than 40. With a shotgun I practice out to 100 yards, but all of the shots I have taken at deer have been within 50 yards. But I wouldnt go any farther than 100.
