Centerfire rifle app. 250-275 yards, Muzzleloader 135-150 yards, Rifled barrel shotgun with slugs110-120 yards and archery 30 yards. I have taken deer at the lower end of these ranges but most of my firearmsdeer have been shot at distances under 100 yards whereas most bow kills are under 20 yards.

My Crossbow is sighted in for out to fourty yards but have shot all mineless then twenty yards and my knight ML is zeroed in at 100 yards and drops four inches at two hundred yards and I would feel comfortable shooting at that distance. But this year was the first year I did not get a deer with my CB so I was able to take the ML out and with all that long range practice I droped a buck at ten yards away.

One of our stands is on a pipeline, and we can see 400 yards in each direction, I am 37 been hunting since I was big enough to wag a weapon and the furthest I have ever shot one was 250 yds. But, I do know what I can do at 300,350, and 400 yds. from shooting milk jugs filled with water, loads of fun if you've never tried it! A few years back I was on a wma, it was around 3 p.m. and I didn't have my climber with me, I was palnning on making a hunt the next morning, a front was coming in that night with sleet and freezing rain. I was on a pipeline that was planted in winter wheat and clover and at 400-450 yds a nice 8 point stepped out. I had my 7mm magnum with me, and a fence post to prop on, and I passed on the shot because I didn't want torisk it and because I thought I could get closer, I started the stalk up the edge of the line, using a hill and the overhanging pine limbs for cover, when I finally made it to where I could see, he was gone, I knewI didn't spook him and knew where I'd be first thing next morning! Next morning here comes 2 guys up the line, when one got right up under me I made a noise so he could see me, he about crapped his pants lol, while talking he told me he had killed a nice 8 point in this spot yesterday evening. What wonderful luck I had lol. By the way, the crows that morning verified what he told me, they were on the gutpile.

I took and made my longest shot ever this year on a whitetailed doe. 200 yds with my 243. I never get to shoot this far. I felt comfortable shooting this far because I am an inch high at 100, the ballistics say there is little to no drop at this range, and I had shooting sticks and planned the shot very well. I'd shoot to 300, just aim a bit high.

125yards. I have only practiced at 100 yards. I own a 30-30, 243 and 270. I figure at 125 yards on any of these the bullet will hit at or near where they did at 100. After that I can read balistic tables but i'm just not sure.
When I get to practice at 200 i'll move my limit out farther

It has been awhile since I had to shoot a deer or coyote over 200 yds but I regulary practice out to 400 yds. Not sure i would take the shot. I think it should be whatever you are comfortable with and have the right equipment for. I would hate to see someone shooting an elk at 400 yds with a 30/30.

I am quite comfortable at 150-200 yards, although 90% of the deer that I have taken were under 50 yards and some only 10 yards away. I know that with my 30-06, I could shoot further, but why? What's the thrill in that? I like to get as close as I can before taking the shot.

In the ranch where I hunt, it is difficult to shoot deer at close ranges. Them suckers seem to always come out between 200 & 400 yards. The longest shot on a deer that I've taken was at 350 yards. Got him. Some of our senderos stretch in excess of 750 yards.
