Use a 30-30 or 270 in this situation ? New Hunter
I have not yet scouted the area I will be hunting yet but will be within the next two weeks. I will be hunting within tall pines and some oaks+small brush. I will also be close to a corn field, but not yet sure how far away. I will have between 100 to 150 for a clear shot supposedly. Does anyone have any recomendations for what rifle to use? I will be rifle hunting for the first time this year. I will be using a 30-30 or a 270. Any recomendations for the brief description I gave saying there may be some light brush as well? Thanks, any sugestions would be great. I am still a greenhorn and this is my third year hunting.

Starrman, either gun will work well, the 270 will be better on shots over 100 yards, but the 30-30 would be my prefernce for 100 and under. I would go with which ever gun you are the most comfortable with.

Both guns will work, but more than likley your shot will be less than 100yrds. There for I would use the 30-30 150gr.
Good Luck!

As much as I love the .30-30 and despise the .270, I have to admit that in almost all deer hunting situations the .270 is the better choice. For some reason some people seem to think that a flat shooting long range round won't kill deer up close, they need a short range round for that. I never could figure out that logic. I've shot deer inside of 10 yds with a 7mm stw and they died just fine.

I have both and have killed deer with my 3030, but I would go with a 270, because a 3030 is only good out to about a 100 yards for the average person. The 270 is good from 10 yards out to 300 for the average person. I have seen many deer out in a corn field at 200 yrs while carring my 3030. I just had to let them walk. Go with a 270 and you wont have to pass up as many deer.
