there are a lot of supply places to buy them. if you don't know how to use them,it is better to buy yourslef a climbing stand. the hooks as they are called, are tricky to learn to use.I used them for over 20 years doing just what you asked. trimming trees for a living. when you ("cut out"that is what you call it when you fall,it can be deadly.
if you know someone that can teach you,then you might try them.I have used mine only two times to climb when hunting.that should say something about useing them.they work GREAT if you don't<font size=5>FALL</font id=size5>.<img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

TC, you'll like this one. A buddy of mine had gotten a job with a tree trimming company awhile ago. They started him out as a ground hand then one day right before lunch the lead trimmer handed him a set of spikes and harness, after a few ground lessons up the tree he goes. When he got to the top he was told to drive in his spikes as hard as he could and of course not wanting to fall he did what he's was told. What he was not told was how to get the spikes back out after they get stuck. After about an hour someone went up and helped him get down.
I thought about getting a pair of climbers, but with my luck I'll end up breaking a leg.

Wirehair; about 30 years ago I was told the same thing( drive them in hard) I also did as I was told, the only problem was the hook didn't hit the tree,it hit my foot just below the ankle. when I did get to the ground,my boot was full of blood. needless to say I learned the hard way.
they can be Deadly in more than one way.LOL <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>

There is a differecne between the "hooks" that tree trimmers and lineman use. Climbing trees takes a longer gaff than the type used to climb electric poles. I know first hand. My Dad was a lineman for 35 years and I took it on myself to climb an old Popular tree in the back yard when I was young. I used his hooks and found out the hard way they dont dig deep enough into the tree. Going up was hard but coming down was murder!! Dad didn't think to much of me for using his hooks either. My butt hurt for weeks for more than one reason if you know what I mean!!!!!
