I am currently hunting with leather hiking boots that have a gore tex lining. Is it ok to waterproof (scent of silicone) these during the hunting season or is it better to hunt with rubber boots (no silcone)? How many hunters use rubber boots as compared to leather boots?

I am currently using a full rubber/ realtree pattern boot (itasca? I think). It is my 1st year in a full rubber boot and I'm liking the results. I'll use them as long as I can and when I start to get too cold this winter, I'll probably switch to my trusty cabellas.

You couldn't ask for a much better scent disperser than a leather boot. When your feet sweat the moisture has to somewhere (into the leather). With rubber boots you can wash the liner to eliminate the scent. With a good liner they're rated to -100 F.

I would have to say the rubber boots. I just recently bought the rocky buckstalker with a 1000 grams of insulation. they might be a lil hot in the early season but when it gets cold my feet wont.

I believe that sometimes leather boots can leave a human scent trail. I always wear LaCrosse burlys or LaCrosse diamondback snake boots. And I have seen deer right in the same spot that I was earlier.

Leather boots STINK, period.
The best way to ruin a stand s to walk to and from it a couple times with leather boots.
Rubber boots are IMO a MUST when bowhunting, But then again i wear rubber gloves enroute to my stands so I may be a little touched<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Rubber boots during bow season. It's hot here in Ga. during the bowseason and the rubber boots seem to contain your scent. Deer cannot readily pick up anything from the rubber, but not the same story with leather. During cold weather I go to Rocky boots (canvas uppers/gortex lining/rubber soled). Either of these seem better than leather uppers.
Deer simply cannot smell 'em.
Just my opinion...

Smack 'em where it hurts!
