I live in southeast Idaho, my Brother in Seattle. This next November(2005) will be the first time we have ever gone deer hunting together. We are looking to head toward Lowell, Id. Anybody have any suggestions on where we might try? Anybody know of somewhere better than Lowell for that matter? We are going up to scout in august, would like a couple ideas from folks who have been there before we head up. Thanks in advance for any info.

Never hunting that area, i would get on the net with Idaho game and fish, and check out the kill reports in each zone and that should give you a little better idea.vangunsmith

I've hunted there for the last 7 years and I own land near Lowell. It would not be my first choice for whitetails. The vegetation is very, very thick and October and November see much rain making it a sort of 40-50 degree rainforest that is not fun to hunt. There is almost no way to hunt this area for whitetails because it is so thick. I would suggest looking at some other areas around McCall.

Around Orofino would be pretty good but the river breaks is mostly private land but on the plus side you can hunt mulies and whitetails. Both those areas are a lot better in terms of the kind of country. It's more farm fields with timbered draws etc. so it's much better to hunt.

Depends on what kind of experience your looking for. That wilderness area isn't for the out of shape or the faint of heart. I have spent alot of time backpacking in the Bitterroots and I can tell you first hand it is extremely rugged with very dense timber. If your looking for a wilderness experience and your in really good physical shape then you won't find better in the lower 48. If your more interested in getting a big buck and a solid more traditional deer hunting experience go out by Orofino or Kooskia.

the whole group going is in pretty dang good shape, so that's not the worry. We are going up to scout in august for a few days, and we would kind of like to have an idea of somewhere we could set up camp and hit the hills right away, instead of wasting time driving around looking for somewhere and not getting much done. Know any good camp sites? are there forest roads at all? that maybe we could drive to the end of and camp at the gate? any suggestions from anyone on a good place?

If your looking for a good way into the wilderness I can supply a couple. Is that what your looking for? If your looking for places around Orofino and/or Kooskia I can give you some also. Let me know which ones you want and I can tell you the places and where to look at maps online.
