RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???

Wayne, that doe with spike bumps is called a buck back home.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> I won't be passing any 9 pointers in MS in November. I'll try to put some meat in the freezer for my parents since my dad has a problem with shooting does on his place. My brother took a 7 pointer, but that was the only deer killed off our place. Dad's old school, and can't bring himself to do it. He knows that it'll improve the structure of his deer herd, but he thinks he will be affecting his chances at a buck later by shooting does early. It's actually just the opposite, but you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I've got to start looking for a late season bow spot on the west side for elk. ANY SUGGESTIONS????? Chasman is keeping his eyes and ears open around the Issaquah Unit, and I'm gonna try to make a trip or 2 to the Mossyrock and Skookumchuck Units before too much longer to look around. But I'll gladly take suggestions. Y'all be good, or good at it.

Anyone else gettin' fall fever? I love this time of year, the weather changes, cold comes in. I read sometime back that El Nino is setting up again, but haven't heard anything about it since. The last time El Nino went off, we got all that snow on the west side! I'm keepin my fingers crossed for some cold nasty stuff to slam Canada and send those birds down. Good luck finding a late elk spot slee. Anyone know of a good, public place, for snow geese in skagit?

Hey Robb.....Not much longer.... :)...........Anyone ever hear of using peanut buter to attract deer..???...In another forum I was reading that that's what they do with success...so.....I tried it tonight....out of about 10 deer that went by it....only one even sniffed it....all the other's just ignored it......Figure that the guy's that said it worked.....are from a peanut farm in south Georgia....lol

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???

No, it does work Wayne. I have done it. Give them a few days to figure out that it tastes good. How did you put it up? The best way we've found to keep coons from eating it up it to drill a hole in a lid, lace a string through the top and tie a knot to hold the jar up. Cut the bottom of the jar out, so they can get to the peanut butter. They don't go nuts, but they do like it.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???

Slee....I nailed the lid to a pole about 3 ft. above the ground....then screwed the jar back on and cut off the bottom.

Sorry Slee <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> - I have to admit I was extreemly jealous of your bow hunting posts... I wish WA didn't have this either or crap for weapon type - I miss bow hunting sooooooo very much. Heck, I wouldn't mind shelling out some extra $$$$ for the opportunity to do both (even if I could only fill one tag) Is that too much to ask? Oh well. Good luck on the bear. Moose Eyes brought some bear sausage to a meeting a while back to give to me - that stuff was awesome. Now, I have also been hearing that cougar meat is some of the best tasting stuff you will ever eat (because they eat fresh stuff and stay away from trash and rot) - might have to invest a little more time next year - wouldn't know where to begin though. As for me, I'll be sitting my butt in a puddle come Saturday morning waiting for some duck and if I'm extreemly lucky a goose <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> - man I do love this time of year.

Slee,
I know the Skookumchuck area a little bit and there are some good elk numbers down there. A lot of private land down there past the coal plant but you can get into some access on the Weyerhauser land. Just find one of their elk highways, hike in a bit and sit tight. May take a couple trips to locate the herd in their cycle but I think it's a good bet. The only thing you may want to look into is Weyerhauser permission. I think they sell permits for like $10 or something. It's been a while so I can't say for sure. Last time I was out there I counted about 50 in the herd with a couple good bulls.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???

Slee,
The Skook is pretty good but lots of pressure. Last year i helped fish & wildlife putt a spike someone poached off the pheasant release area. A good spot is Thompson Creek Road on the left side you will see a power line follow it until you cross a road go left then down toward the river you'll find lots of deer & elk sign Up on the ridge I've seen some Cows & does. Bucoda off Little Hanford road there is plenty of Paper CO land to hunt. Just watch out for private lands. That whole area from Skook to the Steam plant is great it's actually one big heard that splits up you can find them any place from Johnson CR RD to the Steam Plant. I'd try to hunt away from the Steam plat the know it's safe there & you'll see deer & elk along the road bedded right next to no hunting signs. Good luck
Dan

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???

Thanks for the heads-up Titianhunter. I actually hunted off Thompson Creek Rd last year for the early elk season. Didn't beat the hunters in there in December, and ended up pulling out for the late hunt and moving over to Area 21 & 22 on the south end of Ft. Lewis. I had 2 reports right before the late season that 2 small herds were spotted in there. The problem with that area is you get bird hunters and dog training trials going on on weekends, so that can screw you up. If nothing else looks good, I'll likely be back to the Skook. I've logged a lot of miles in there off Johnson Creek Rd and Thompson Creek Rd looking for elk and turkeys. You may can tell me more, but when I drove in by the steam plant last November, almost all the land on both sides of the road is posted No Trespassing.

If you think of anything else, shoot me an e-mail. I'm looking for a late season spot right now. Hopefully with a little less pressure than the Skookumchuck area. Do you know anything about the east end of the Skook just south of Alder Lk.? Seems like a ton of timber co land in there too.

Kramer,
Sorry I didn't see your post on the Skookumchuck until now. I guess it got lost in the page break. If you are willing, could you shoot me an e-mail. I'd like to talk specifics with you. I've spent some time in there around Johnson Creek on both sides of the river chasin' turkeys, deer, and elk. Any info would be a big help. I ain't afraid of doing the legwork. I've never been as far east as the Vail Tree Farm, but I've been thinking about looking farther east of the reservoir and even closer to Hwy 7.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???

Slee,
I haven't checked the board for a few days (bird hunting) so I just saw your request. The first thing I think you will need to do is check with Weyerhauser about accessing their land out there. I think you may need an access permit but I'm not sure. Other than that land out there everything else is private. There is a good sized herd of elk out there and you should have a good chance at them but I'd hate to steer you into an illegal situation. Like I said in my other post it's been a while since I've been out there hunting. If you wanted to do some scouting of the area drive out through Bucoda and take a left on Big Hanaford Road (I think) turn and head out past the coal plant. Keep on going until you see the yellow gates. There will be one at the end of that road and one about a mile from the end. The majority of the elk I've seen have been migratingon a path between the two gates and into the fields.

Let me know what Weyerhauser has to say.

slee 10-14-2002 09:52 AM

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???

I haven't actually called Weyerhauser about it, but from what I understand from several guys who hunt out there and other Weyco lands you don't need a permit. I've hunted it a dozen times between deer, elk, and turkey seasons, and have never seen a Weyco truck in there. As far as I know, the only Weyco land that requires a permit is the land north of and around Enumclaw. But I will call and post back. Thanks for the info.

Evening all, hope all is well, we made it back to Washington safe and sound. RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???

Got my first ever mule deer Saturday opener - Nice 3x3 came down the hill with 15 does. Right after cleanin' him out, 3 more bucks came down the hill across from me (all 2x2 mulies), but then, the monster buck showed up about 150 yds from where I had shot my 3x3. That BIG buck came down with a doe and was at least a 5x5 - I mean it was HUGE. The thing sat in the bushes about 500 yards away, and I could make out his rack w/out using binoculars. I was hoping he'd be pushed over towards my dad, but he got up and headed out. About 20 minutes later, a hunter came walking across the top - if only he had come through a little earlier, he might have pushed that thing right into my dad. Oh well - I guess it is called &quot;hunting&quot; and not &quot;finding&quot; for a reason - but I got mine! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hello all!

This is my first time to this board I just stumbled across it tonight. I have already seen some great info and would like to join in. I will be taking my 14 yr old son bow hunting this year, he has been with me before but this is the first year he is legal to hunt.

I'm looking for an area to hunt deer and elk, last year I hunted on Fort Lewis and took a small doe, also hunted in the skookum on the back side of the vail tree farm. Only problem with vail it's all walk in! I don't mind the walk in but if you get an elk down what a chore!

Does anybody know of an area on Fort Lewis that has some elk? Any pointers would be helpfull.

May the force be with you!!!!
