Welcome aboard JB. This is a great group of folks. Can't really help you on the question your asking, but you will likely get plenty of help.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
jbthehut, been there done that. I hunted the southern end of Ft. Lewis(area 21 and 22) in the Deschutes Unit last December. I had some recent reports last late season that a herd had been seen around the pheasant release sites. I drove those areas and didn't see an elk track. Not saying they aren't in there because the guy I was hunting them with had seen them himself the year before. But I won't waste my time this year hunting ghost elk. Too many other areas around that have elk. Plus you have to deal with dog trials and other traffic in those bird zones. And as bad as it may sound, you are going to have to plan for a haul out for elk. Not many good places that you can drive up to a kill for archery unless you get lucky. Plan for the worst, and hope for the best. Welcome aboard.

I talked with the director on Fort Lewis and he told me that if there were any elk that would be the place, but even he was sceptical if there were any at all. I scouted a bit last year off of Johnson creek rd but it seemed the only open area that was not private was the back entrances to Vail. Do you know of any areas that are open. One other option, do you know the packwood white pass area at all, I was thinking of scouting out an area up there. By the way someone in the last weekend of modern firearm took a 165lb 5x5 out of training area 22. |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Jbthehut, I'm not sure what units you are looking at for late archery, but I don't know of any unit in the packwood/white pass area that is open for late elk on the west side. As far as Johnson Creek area, I usually go in from the Thompson Creek Rd side which is across the river and on the other side of the reservoir. I've seen elk sign in there, but have never got into them. You can also come into the Skookumchuck unit from Hwy 7 south of Alder Lake.

Slee
Thanks for the info I'm going to check the area off thompson crk rd in the next couple of days. Another area iv'e been looking at is on the back side of alder lake and the far east end of the skook. I know there's a lot of timber land but you also have the snoqualmie national forest right there as well. The private timber lands are most likely gated but the national forest should be open. I'm going to scout there as well this week so if I find anything good I'll let you know. By the way be very careful in the Bucoda area and around the steam plant it is all closed and they do patrol it. I've heard rumors that you can request access but I have never been able to find out which office to talk to. |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Evening all, hope all is well, not much going on here, back at work and working mid shift, oh joy!!! Saw 19 roosters today, they were all within 200 yards of each other, wish I had my shotgun!

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Well hope everyone is doing great, haven't had time to keep up with whats going on... I did bag a nice, nice 3x3 blactail buck the first day of opening season. I would post a pic but not too sure how to do it. Any suggestions....Thanks
BRian |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Well, I really shouldn't be on here right now. I've still got to finish packing before I fly out tomorrow for a 10 day trip back to MS. I can't wait. I'll get several hunts in, and hope to bring at least one deer back with me. It'll be a little strange to be able to take up to 8 deer(3 bucks, 3 does, and 2 more does if I use a bow). I'm even going to take my 4 year old son with me at least once. We've got 100+ acres with several shooting houses on foodplots, so they won't see him getting restless. He's so excited, and I am too. I'll check back from time to time to keep tabs on everybody. Y'all have a good one. I sure will.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Slee, that sounds aweful. I hope you can somehow manage to enjoy some of your trip I'd be willing to take that miserable trip off you hands though Good Luck! Gonna try and bust me some Geese Saturday - been lookin' forward to that for a long time.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Hey Slee, good luck, sounds like a great trip....WANWTF, I am going to Brady on sat, I passed the Goose identification test for that area, other than that, I am limited on the hunting...unles I want to go to the east side, and I don't have the time. Ft. Lewis never had a lot of geese, and I am still wondering whether I want to register my gun or not.
Now that the big game hunting is over for me, I am ready to start with the waterfoul hunting. Anyway, good luck with the hunt on Sat and let me know how you do. I thought I was going to have a good year of hunting, but all the places I asked for permission wanted more than 1,000.00 for the season. Also, anyone know of a good taxidermist that doesn't want my first born, i would like to get my buck done. I did find out that the guy I was using in Centralia, passed away last year. He only charged 250.00 and all in Tacoma want 480.00 Talk to ya later BRian |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Hey Gator, You might try Stoller,s out of Raymond for the taxidermy, I had him do a deer and a mountain goat a couple years ago and was happy with them. I believe he charged $350. Good luck on the goose hunt Saturday. I just live afew miles from Brady, I'll herd them back to you :)
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Thanks for the info Have 2, i will call them today. Do you do any waterfouling out there??? We have had some good times down on the loop, chasing ducks. Last year I had a lot of geese pass over but I wasn't legal to hunt them... This year will be different. I never did see any Duskys flying around, but never did get look real close..
Anyway thanks again, and if you know of any other hunting down there besides the loop and Shoeweiler rd let me know.. Later BRian |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Gator,
Try Stuff-it Taxidermy out of Centralia, He takes a while but does good stuff I think he charges about $135 a bird I'm not sure on his big game prices but he does pretty good. Well I hope that helps I can't wait to get back & get out hunting There is NO such thing as a bad day HUNTING Good Luck & Good Hunting Dan |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Well gator, how was the hunt? I heard some shootin and some geese over that way did you do any good? I haven't done much duck or goose hunting in years, but I guess I'll have to start, we ended up with a black lab pup a couple days ago that was lost or abandoned. No owners have turned up yet so I may have a new bird dog.
|
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Thanks for the help, I called info for the place in Centralia, but no info on stuff it Taxidermy, Do you have a #.
The birds just aren't down like they should be with this nice weather, we killed 5 ducks is all. I wanted to set up for the geese but since it was the first time, we just wanted to see where they were landing. I saw a flock of duskys on the feel free to hunt land on the loop, and all the others know where they are safe. I guess I will wait for some colder weather to push them down. Anyway thanks again all for the help, I am picking my deer up from the processer today, and having some for Thankgiving. Happy Thanksgiving everyone and talk to you soon BRian |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Sorry I don't have the # with me try looking in Rochester, I now the place is off of old hwy 99 down by scatter creek the owner is Mark that's all I know i can get the info to you in a couple of weeks when I get home plus another place in thurston county

Monring all, hope everyone had a great turkey day, we did, first time
I ever fried a turkey, man was it great. Not much going on here, just getting everything put away for the winter, what fun. "ATTITUDE REFLECTS LEADERSHIP, CAPTAIN!" |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Well, I made it back without killing a deer. I did get to hunt at least part of the day on 7 days. I even took my 4yo son to spend an afternoon in a shooting house. It was also the first time I've ever been trapped in a shooting house by 23 hen turkeys. I didn't want to educate them to people sitting in the shooting house, so I had to wait 45 minutes for them to feed out of the food plot. I had several close encounters with deer before daylight, but no luck after sunrise. It was good to get out though. Now I have to regroup for western elk with the bow.
Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em! |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Evening all hope all is well, Sorry to hear you didn't get anything Slee, that would have been cool to see all those turkeys,

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Went Goose hunting finally on Sunday. Had a great time 4 out of 5 got geese, I managed to get a dusky. Haven't had that much fun since the modern deer opener. Now if I could only find a place a little closer to home where I can hunt geese. Oh well... back to standing in the puddles shootin' ducks. Hope everyone is doin' well. Welcome back Robb.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Slee
Welcome back, sorry no deer but if it was easy they wouldn't call it hunting. I've been hunting elk in the Winston unit thats near mossyrock, "Lots of elk" Last friday we found a small herd of 20 with a couple of spikes but they doubled back on us and we missed them. On sunday my son got within a 100yds of 4 cows but couldn't get any closer. Unfortunately on dec 2nd the rules changed to 3pt or better no cows. I think we'll probably keep hunting there though, it's a good area with lots of access and NO gates. Any luck for you! |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
I haven't been out yet. I'm going down to hunt the Fall River unit (N. or Pe Ell) in the morning. The wife wants to go shopping tomorrow evening, so I may only get to hunt the morning. If I find elk, though, she's gonna have to postpone the shopping. Priorities! Hopefully I'll get to hunt most of next weekend too. Kinda tough to drive 2 hours, hunt 3 hours, and then drive back 2 hours. Not much time to find elk in there. I'll just have to cover as much ground as possible.
Good luck in the Winston. I hunted it in the early season last year, but the crowds were just too much. It sucks that they change the restrictions during the middle of the season, but at least you've found some elk to chase. That's a big advantage on the jungle side. There's lots of places for them to hide. Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em! |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Slee,
Good luck in PeEll always found lots of sign out that way just never the elk. You can drop the wife off in Centralia & let her shop while you hunt.... Well I make it back home Tuesday & I'm looking forward to getting out Sunday & Monday any suggestion for W WA for pheasant or grouse with in am hour of Ft Lewis would be great if anyone can help me out... goto get the dogs out plus I really want to go too There is NO such thing as a bad day HUNTING Good Luck & Good Hunting Dan |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
I broke down and told her that I wouldn't be back in the morning unless it was way too crowded, or I filled my tag with something(elk or deer). She didn't fuss too bad. I'm having to give up next Saturday evening for a Christmas party anyway, so she'll have to get over it. I keep thinking she's learning, but then she goes and forgets how things are supposed to work after a few days. I'll keep teaching though.

RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Hey everyone,
I am a long time WA resident, unfortunately living in VA for now. I am looking to move my elk hunts from souixon GMU to the Olympic Penninsula, around the Forks, WA area, I heard the Dickey unit has re-opened. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction, I will trade some of my hot spots(very specific) for good places to start scouting. Just looking for a little change of scenery. |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
My wife forwarded this to me from her father. It explains alot about us Mississippians; and I thought it was pretty funny, so I posted it on here for your enjoyment. For those of you who need further explanation afterwards(and I'm sure there will be some), you can shoot me an e-mail or post questions here.
"What a True Mississippian Knows" Only a true Mississippian knows the difference between a hissie fit and a conniption, and that you don't "HAVE" them but "PITCH" them. Only a true Mississippian knows how many fish, collard greens, turnip greens, peas, beans, etc. make up "a mess". Only a true Mississippian can show or point out to you the general direction of "yonder". Only a true Mississippian knows exactly how long "directly" is - as in: "Going to town, be back directly." Even Mississippian babies know that "Gimme some sugar" is not a request for the white, granular sweet substance that sits in a pretty little bowl on the middle of the table. All true Mississippians know exactly when "by and by" is. They might not use the term, but they know the concept well. Only a true Mississippian knows instinctively that the best gesture of solace for a neighbor who's got trouble is a plate of hot fried chicken and a big bowl of cold potato salad. (If the neighbor's trouble is a real crisis, they also know to add a large banana puddin'!) Only true Mississippians grow up knowing the difference between "right near" and "a right fur piece." They also know that "just down the road" can be 1 mile or 20. Only a true Mississippian both knows and understands the difference between a redneck, a good ol' boy, and po' white trash. No true Mississippian would ever assume that the car with the flashing turn signal is actually going to make a turn. A true Mississippian knows that "fixin'" can be used as a noun, a verb, or an adverb. Only a true Mississippian knows that the term "booger" can be a resident of the nose, a descriptive, as in "that ol' booger", or something that jumps out at you in the dark and scares you senseless. Only true Mississippians make friends while standing in lines. We don't do "queues", we do "lines"; and when we're "in line", we talk to everybody! Put 100 true Mississippians in a room and half of them will discover they're related, even if only by marriage. True Mississippians never refer to one person as "y'all." True Mississippians know grits come from corn and how to eat them. Every true Mississippian knows tomatoes with eggs, bacon, grits, and coffee are perfectly wonderful; that redeye gravy is also a breakfast food; and that fried green tomatoes are not a breakfast food. When you hear someone say, "Well, I caught myself lookin'..," you know you are in the presence of a genuine Mississippian! Only true Mississippians say "sweet tea" and "sweet milk." Sweet tea indicates the need for sugar and lots of it - we do not like our tea unsweetened. "Sweet milk" means you don't want buttermilk. And a true Mississippian knows you don't scream obscenities at little old ladies who drive 30 MPH on the freeway. You just say, "Bless her heart" and go your own way. Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em! |
RE: ANYBODY FROM WASHINGTON STILL AROUND???
Morning all, good luck on your hunt Slee, liked your last post!!! welcome to the board moemeadors, Hope you like it here. Hope everybody had a great weekend, we've had a bit of a cold snap here, I like it, just wish there was some snow out on the ground, as of yet none, but they are calling for it later in the week. Been seeing a lot of pheasants, saw an all black rooster the other day, he had a red ring around the neck thought it was pretty cool, so I've got my sights set on it. Other than that, not much going on took the kids to see Santa Claus 2 yesterday, very good movie!!!
