I awoke at 5:15 as usual for the first pheasant hunt of the year, grabbed a cup of coffee and woke the dog to eat before hitting the field. Tashas been my huntin partner for three years and has flushed four birds for me and sits on them until I get there, I never spent one day truly training her, for a german sheperd she sure can hunt like a lab. We approached the field from the west as we have in the past three years, Me my dog and twenty acres of tall grass and cover, a creeck and cackling pheasant in a proven field. We paused for a moment to take it all in and catch our (my) breath, Tasha was ready to go. Walking in I saw a small game trail thought about it then past it up for a slow pace through the tall thicket and down to the creeck where I had in the past taken a few birds, as we approached the creeck a light snow began to fall and back where we came in a roster came up and flew into the corn field, gone for today, as we walked along the edge where the grass is tall you could see the frozen track marks from birds running along the creecks edge. The couple of passes we made accross the field past quickly until we were about seventy yards from that game trail I mentioned earlier, When all of a sudden three hens and two rosters came up cackleing and whooping their wings, I got off a fleeting shot with my 26in. side by side 12ga. knowing it wouldnt quit make it, When the follow up shot should have instinctly happened I couldnt, the picture perfect snow covered frosted field, with five birds in flight that we had the good fortune to encounter made me take pause and reflect on all that is good and beutiful in this world, Moments like that dont come along every day. We pulled up at the edge of the field had a drink of cool water and WALKED AWAY SMILLING!!!!!!!!!! HAPPY HUNTING !!!!!!!!!!!!

The essence of hunting indeed. That sounds like a great
day to me. Living in Chicago I only get to hunt public land
and a sight like that Ive only seen once in my life.
One snowy Dec morning I was on a hunt and flushed a few birds(no dog)
not much shooting, definitely no birds, but it didnt matter.
Great day to be alive an even better day to be out hunting.
Good luck guys, keep your game bags full
