Mossberg pattern results

Went to the range Friday and tested my Mossberg 835 with a Tru Glo Strut Stopper choke, toped with a 2X Simmons Prodiamond scope. All shots were at 40 yards and hits were taken only from the vitals.

Winchester Supreme Double X Magnum 3” #6 shot
1st shot –13 hits
2nd shot - 18 hits

Winchester Supreme Double X Magnum 3.5” #5shot
1st shot- 15 hits
2nd shot- 11

Left the range feeling a bit disappointed. I was hoping to get better results than that. I was also wondering why people complain about the 3.5” shells, they didn’t kick that hard, but they didn’t shoot that well. Went to she store and bought more shells, and some 0000 steel wool. Next I went home and polished the barrel on my shotgun.

Winchester Supreme High Velocity 3” #6shot
1st shot- 20 hits
2nd shot- 11 hits

Winchester Supreme High Velocity 3.5” #6shot
1st shot- 56 hits
2nd shot-35 hits

I left the range giggling inside, well all the way home. I found the sweet load for my gun. After shooting the 3.5” HV loads I know why people complain about the kick, my shoulder is still sore. Can’t wait until April 6th.

Well, now for a shot of reality. I'm not trying to bash you and i commend you for posting your target as most people who make claims such as yours never do.

Here we have a 40 yard target shot with #6. In your first post you claim you are only counting vital hits. A vital hit is a pellet penetrating the brain/skull and the vertebrae from about mid neck up. When your first test firings yielded 13 and 18 hits in the "vitals" i couldn't understand why you were disappointed. After seeing your target and what you refer to as vital hits, i see why.

First off, a birds wattle is not a vital area. Second, don't be so quick to count those #6 hits in the spine when you start plunging below the feather line expecially out to 40 yards. Honestly fella, i only cont 6 LETHAL hits to the VITALS.

Not trying to let the air out of your sail here, i don't think i could if i tried, but for heaven's sake your conting hits to the beak and snood and on into the neck where there is no vital. I will tell ya, some of those hits your conting in the lower spine and neck won't even penetrate through the birds feathers out to 40 yds. And in case you didn't know this, the beak, snood, and wattles are not VITALS for god's sake. Would you kill somebody if you pierced their lips and ears repeatedly?? I hope not, cause i have seen some teenagers walking around that should be corpses by now.

I see this every year about this time. Guys caiming they put 30 and 40 hits in the vitals out to 40 yards with their guns and i ask every time to post a target like you did so that i may see what they are counting. In a case like yours, your better off saying you got 6 hits to the vitals. I know your not going to agree with me, but it is the truth even if nobody else will tell ya.

VITALS man, it's all in the VITALS. Familiarize yourself with the anatomy of the bird and you will see your error.

knockemstiff,
i was at the range early this week and had the same thing happen to me. took my new rem sp-10 with 5 different boxes of shells including federal #4 & #5, remington #4, and winchester #5 to the range to test pattern. at 40 yards the best i could get was 3 to 6 vital hits (skull and spine), not what i expected from a 10 ga. the gun only came with a full lead choke so i hope once i install an aftermarket turket tube it does better. ive narrowed my choices down to kicks or rhino. then is shot my mossberg 835 with scope to double check that the scope wasnt bumped last year and that shoots better than the 10 ga. with federal #5, 3 1/2" i had about 12-15 in the skull/spine. im using a h.s. undertaker choke tube. might want to try another brand turkey tube to more concentrate those hits to the skull/spine area.

Bosstom,
I do plan on testing more shells, but due to time/money restraints it will take time. You would not believe the money I have spent getting ready for Turkey season.

zzvedder,
Excuse me I misspoke. I should have said the head and neck, not the vitals. My apologies for any offence you took. Thanks for taking the time to help guide a new turkey hunter, your friends must really respect you as a great guide and instructor. Thanks

LAHUNTER,
It was suggested to me on this board to use the steel wool to polish the barrel of a shotgun. I used a rifle cleaning rod with a brass brush and wraped the steel wool around the brush and attached it to a drill, made it as smooth as glass. Dont know if it really helped?

No matter what ,Anthony you killed that bird at 40 yards and if the bird was 3inches either way he's still died. Its just finding a shell that may work better for ya , I shoot Rem.4x6's we'll try them this spring aswell so hang on and don't buy them...BT

Well, i knew you'd take it that way. Oh well. Great instructor and guide?? All i can say is i know what i know.

Actually BT, if the bird was three inches to the left it would not have died at 40 yds.
