Default Pics on mounting a turkey fan

Pic 1 shows the fan after it was cut from the body
pic 2 shows cutting the feathers from the front of the fan. Make sure you keep them intact. Put a little borax on base. It will dry very quick. You will put the feathers back on front of the fan when you get ready to hang it.
Pic 3 shows the fan ready to cut the meat and bone off.
Pic 4 With a good pair of scissors, cut most of the meat and bone off.

Next set of pics are on the next page

Pic 5 Cut top bone and bottom bone out with scissors.
Pic 6 After removing as much meat as possible with a knife, this is what the front of the fan should look like.
Pic 7 This is what the back of the fan should look like. Make sure you cut all the bones out.
Pic 8 It's ready to be pinned to dry. Rub borax on base of fan. Pin the two primary tail feathers down on a piece of cardboard. Put some more borax on the fan after it has been pinned down. If done properly, the fan will take no more tha two weeks to dry. Keep the fan inside if possible where it will be dry. It will not smell if you take off enough meat and bone. DO NOT let maggots clean it for you. You will have a smelly mess that will be ruined.

Thanks for this. Hopefully I'll get to make good use of it this year!

Thanks for the info and instructions.. As stated above hopefully I too will be able to put this to good use.. I am guessing it is the same thing with the beard, but what about the spurs? What do you do to try and save them to add to the mount?

For the feet, you can either cut them off with a hacksaw by cutting the leg bone on either side of the spur and threading some leather through the bone holes to hang, or you can cut the legs off midway at the joint and keep them whole. If you keep them whole, you have to pose them till they are dry or the toes will curl. I also cap the end of the legs with shotgun shell brass.

An alternative to Borax is salt. Thats what I use and it works great.

I probably should try cutting those bones off. I usually leave them right on as long as I get the meat off and it fits well in the mounting kits.
