Default mouth calls

Just curious what types of mouth calls you all use. Wondering if theres much of a difference in sound quality between the lower end and higher end calls, as I have never used the higher end calls. I've been using hs calls for a few years now, the deuce cutter is my favorite and I've called in many birds with it. Before that I was using different knight and hale mouth calls, and they were great also. Anybody use Woodhaven mouth calls?

Anybody use Woodhaven mouth calls?
They are about all I use period. Not just mouth calls but all calls.

My absolute favorite mouth call is the Sadler McGraw. Without a doubt the best call to kee on. Super smooth yelps. Not too raspy... just a perfect amount.

The difference in price is minimal... an HS runs what about $6? And the Woodhavens run $10 maybe $12 tops? And the WH hold up better than just about anything I've ever used too.

I prefer the higher end calls. They sound better to my ears and tend to hold up better. I haven't bought any diaphrams from the big call companies in many years.Last year I used primarily the same diaphram the entire season and it didn't change pitch. Twenty years ago I would go through several Perfection or Quaker Boy calls a seaon as they would break down or the sound quality would deteriorate.

At the convention Saturday in Nashville I got a couple of the the Jim Pollard "Signiture Series" calls - Smackdown (raspy) and Batwing III (clearer, higher, breaks well with a mild raspy second note). Jim won the Grand National this year for the fourth time. Both are easy to use. If the season were starting tomorrow I would likely have that Batwing III in my mouth. The calls were 10 bucks apiece.

I like HS flex frames best. They take a little longer to get accustomed to than aluminum frames but they sound great and last forever.

A $3 mouth call will call a gobbler in just as easy as a $10 mouth call. The turkey can't tell if it's a low end or high end call. It's knowing how to call, when to call and how much to call, and that comes with experience. Some of the higher end calls may sound better to our ears, but to a turkey it really doesn't matter that much.I like the Diamond Cutter and Piggyback Stacked True Triple by Primos. I have many others, but those are my two most used. I'm probably as guilty as most of you by buying calls just to see how they sound, whether I use them or not. If I like how it sounds, I'll keep it, if not, I'll probably throw it away.

I totally agree with that. I guess the reason I asked is because I'm thinkin about entering a state contest next week and wonder how I'll stack up against the guys with the woodhavens and higher end calls. Not expecting anything from this contest but to gain experience in competition calling as it would be my first, but I'd love to get really serious with it. But I do think I can stack up well against a few of the guys, even with my HS calls. I guess my question now is, if I were to buy a woodhaven or other higher quality call, strictly for competition calling, will I be able to tell a significant difference in sound quality from my HS calls? And would these higher end calls sound better to a judge? But like swampcollie said, they aren't much more money, just a few bucks. I'll just buy a couple and try em out, I just kinda want to stay faithful to my HS calls I guess.

Competition would be the only time I would see a high end call having an advantage. Your not calling to a nondiscriminating gobbler. You are now calling to a human who wants to hear near perfection. You can still make sweet music to a judges ears with a $3-$4 dollar mouth call though, but I imagine 99% of the contestants are using custom calls. I could see a more noticable difference when it comes to pot calls at a competition. The higher end calls then would definately have an advantage. Just like a mouth call, any pot call CAN call in a turkey. It's up to the individual using it.Good luck in competition.

I agree that the price of a call doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of the sound. The trouble for me is I haven't found any $3.00 calls that sound good for me. Unless it sounds good to me and I have confidence in that call I simply can't use it. That's just me.

For the past few years I've been getting my diaphrams from Jim Montanaro (Empire Game Calls in Liverpool, NY) and they are pretty reasonable, but not $3.00 per call. I prefer 3 and4 reed calls and these tend to be more expensive.

Where can one get 3 or 4 reed cut diaphrams (V-cut, Batwing cut or ghost cut), stretched lower reeds, smooth yelps, light rasp, ability to whine and Kee Kee) for $3.00? If I could find some I would be all over it.
