The best box call I' ve ever heard, in my humble opinion, is the Primos ' Lil Heartbreaker. It is their one sider, not a two sider like its bigger brother/sister, the Heartbreaker. I think it gives a genuine high-low yelp with a little squeak in it, like most hens. It has good volume/carry.
#2 IMHO is Quaker Boy' s Grand Old Master. I' ve successfully called in many toms with that box call. You can really crank up the volume with the Grand Old Master, and still have a nice sound, though there is less of a distinct two-note sound, and no squeak with the GOM. As between the ' Lil Heartbreaker and the Grand Old Master, I think the Quaker Boy sounds sweeter, especially at moderate volume levels, but I think the ' Lil Heartbreaker actually sounds more like a real live hen.
As far as slates are concerned, ordinarily I just carry a " plain jane" slate and pay more attention to my strikers (of which I have too many), though I also bought a Woods Wise, I think it is, Little Green Giant (?) with a special striker that makes the combination waterproof/rainproof. I think that " slate" is very versatile and makes a nice yelp, and the waterproof feature means I don' t have to worry about using it on damp mornings. I mostly use my plain jane slate for soft tree calls and some purrs and putts, but I usually go diaphragm for purrs and putts (though I do have volume control issues), kee-kees, clucks and cutting, yelping with the box calls.
